I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima, 6cyl with 110,000 miles on it. 3 times in the past year the car has suddenly shifted down to what seems to be first gear and will not shift up. It only has happened when the car has run awhile at highway speed. After turning the car off and starting it again, the car runs fine with no apparent problems. There are also no other noticeable shifting problems and will run great for months before happening again. Is the transmission starting to fail or might there be another explanation? Any info would be appreciated.
This sounds like some sort of computer issue, with the transmission going into “limp home” mode. Look in a website called Maxima.org for help (its a chat forum) or look for Technical Service bulletins on the internet through Google.
