I have a 2000 ford Windstar and lately, when I turn the wheel either direction I have a loud creaking sound like something is ready to break. Like something is tightening up.
Does the steering wheel feel the same as always? If so I would suspect the clock spring. If the feel is different then the problem is more serious, like the U-joint or the power steering.
Creaking or groaning while turning the steering wheel at low speed may indicate the tie rod ends need lubrication or replacement. This was the case with my wife’s 98 Windstar at 56k miles. There were no grease fittings on the tie rods, but my mechanic was able to lube the tie rod ends using a needle fitting on the grease gun.

I hope by now your Windstar issue has been resolved. If not, I know that Ford had put out a large recall for Windstars. Check with your local dealership to see if yours is included. If you have already done so, don’t mind me!
