People keep arguing the limitations of the autonomous vehicle as it is NOW and then project that to when autonomous vehicles will be available to the public. As an software engineer and carbuff I’ve been very interested in this technology, so I’ve been reading almost everything I can about it. From my research we are still 5-10 years away before the first autonomous vehicle will be able to meet the standards set forth by IEEE and SAE. Maybe even longer. Are there things autonomous vehicles can’t handle NOW - Yes. That doesn’t mean those problems won’t be solved 5-10 years from now. This technology is changing extremely fast. Millions of lines of code is being added/rewritten every month. It is one of the most new exciting technology challenges today.
