Just something to take your mind off your troubles…
I’m amazed no one was KILLED. I’ve personally never had an accident with lifting a car, but I know a few people who have. So I’m EXTREMLY OVERLY CAUTIOUS. Almost to the point of being paranoid about it. Before I put any part of my body under a vehicle, I make sure It’s safe. I would never get under a vehicle that was only on a hydraulic jack. When vehicle is on good quality jack-stands, I’d also have my hydraulic jack help support (just in case).
My favorites are the look on the guy’s face when the jack stand drops and the flamethrower to the face.
I’m not the safety police but I’ve been known to have a jack stand, jack and then slide the removed wheel underneath as a third protection.
Not paranoid… awareness of your self preservation!
Knowing how stuff can go very wrong very quickly!
Not to make lite of the seriousness of being safe while working UNDER a car. A friend of mine was working under his car and the jack slipped. He was perfectly fine - the car fell in such a way not to hit him at all. However, he was stuck under the car. His wife didn’t know what to do so she called me because I knew something about cars - bad idea. Another friend of ours was over at my house and we went right over. When we saw the situation and making sure he was ok - we both just started laughing our *sses off. His wife wasn’t very happy. He asked - “Can you get me out of here”. Me: “Maybe - but we’re going to get a pizza first. Can we get you anything?” That kind of joking went on for a good 5 minutes before we were able to get him out of there. And trust me - ALL OF OUR FRIENDS HEARD ABOUT IT.
Well, does not sound at all unusual for my group of friends either. Once they know you’re OK, it would be expected to exploit the compromising situation for a bit.
What gets me are the completely clueless that don’t belong under a car. I’ve seen some vids of guys with the truck on the ground on an incline, wheels not chocked, no parking brake applied, disconnect the RWD driveshaft… and almost get run over by their own truck.
When I was a kid, a local guy, who ran a small liquor distribution business, wound-up with his head under one of the wheels of his Chevy panel truck.
He survived (albeit with some permanent disabilities), but I couldn’t figure-out how he managed to be in that situation. Then, my brother explained that some Mafiosos wanted a portion of his business, and…
That’s what good friends are for. We still joke about.
