Jeep Laredo 2014 - noise on low speed

Hello! I hope someone has some ideas about the source of this noise. It appears when I drive/turn on low speeds (like when parking) and it comes in and out - it is not a constant sound, but instead feels like it goes through a cycle - rising and falling. It also has a ring to it. My mechanic checked the breaks and the suspension and could not find anything.

Thank you!

With out hearing the noise it would be hard to say exactly what the cause is. but you can have this checked out. you normally hear a loose heat shield at very low speeds or stopped and idling

.

Is the noise a whine? clicking? clunking? squealing? Give us a little help here!

Agreed on a possible exhaust-related problem. Such as a loose heat shield or even something loose in the muffler. That would track with the seeming change in RPMs.

More of a clunking noise…it sounds very clear, not rusty.

Since there’s no sound clip . . .

Have someone check for a torn CV-boot.

Another more serious symptom of a potentially torn CV boot are clicking noises from the axle during turns. This is a symptom that the CV joint has become loose to the point where play has developed, causing it to click during turns. A clicking CV joint will need to be replaced, as most CV joints are usually not serviceable.

+1 for cv axle(s) as long as it is not a Jeep Wrangler…???..

If it is a hard clicking noise when turning into a parking spot or any kind of sharp turn but goes away as you straighten the wheel, then it is probably a bad cv axle, if it does it turning sharp like almost full lock of the steering wheel either left (left axle clicking=bad) or right (right axle clicking=bad) or both (left/right) then probably requires both axles…

If your mechanic is having a problem diagnosing a simple cv axle noise, you probably need a new mechanic… (if it is an axle noise)…

BTW I don’t see what model of Jeep you have, Laredo is the sub model or trim package… Is it a Wrangler, or a Cherokee, or a Grand Cherokee, or a Compass, or a Patriot??

The Wrangler does not have the same front end as the rest of the Jeeps, it runs a solid front differential/axle housing, with U-joints instead of the cv axles…

2014 Grand Cherokee low-speed rattle = electric power steering rack (EPS). Very common on WK2.

Noise only when turning at parking speed → 100 % the rack motor/gear.
TSB 08-036-18 sometimes helps, otherwise live with it or replace rack (~$2k).

You’re not alone, tons of them do it. Easy diagnosis: noise changes with steering wheel movement.

It’s a Cherokee!

The noise is there even when going straight at low speed…

Since it is a Cherokee and Not a Grand Cherokee, do you mind informing us if you have the 2.4L I4 or the 3.2L V6 and is it a FWD or AWD/4WD???

Can you give us as much detail as possible about when, how, etc the vehicle makes this noise???

The more detail you can give the better chance you will get a good answer, remember that your mechanic has seen, heard and probably drove the vehicle and can’t figure it out, we have not seen, driven or much less heard the noise, and we are still missing details about what is going on, kinda makes it hard to guess correctly with vague info given…

Laredo is the base trim level for the Grand Cherokee.

So for the OP’s (regular, not Grand per the OP) Cherokee, does that mean it is the 2.4L FWD being it is the Laredo trim level??

Sorry for not providing this right away - it is my boyfriend’s car. It is Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.4L. Thank you for the help!

The Grand Cherokee was not available with a 4-cylinder engine, perhaps it is a Cherokee with Latitude or Limited trim package.

The exact specifications do not matter much, you will need to demonstrate the offending noise to a technician so it can be identified. Post # 10 seems plausible, a noise inside the power steering motor.

Sounds like there is nothing of immediate concern but you have money left over.
