I wished I could remember where I read the transmission article. It was a trade publication mailed to the dealer and it was something I skimmed over during lunchtime.
From memory, they were also figuring transmission problems as a sum total.
Not one particular make and model, but all of them lumped together; from Audi to Zundapp.
I’ll ask the transmission friend of mine about this. He’s been at it for over 40 years, and like Transman, knows them all inside and out. He receives a lot of trade papers and no doubt is very familiar with trends in general.
A friend of mine used to own a 1957 Zundapp. I loved the idea of a door in the front and the back. To bad it never caught on.

$2600 is reasonable. Does your mechanic do this type of work on a regular basis? What is the warranty? If you trust him, go for it. You will be paying him at least $1000 if you have him put it back together without a repair.
Transmissions should last the life of the car. The problems are quite premature. Did you do the regular maint?
