Looks like you’re right! I didn’t know what ORVR is and how refueling is different on newer vehicles. Come to think of it, that must be why I smell gasoline when I refuel! I read topping of your gas tank can damage the charcoal, so maybe that’s what happened.

The tank vent hose? I believe you – I think it will cause the gas pump to shut off right away. I don’t have ORVR to experiment with.
That can’t happen on today’s vehicles
The ORVR system has an overfill check valve that prevents that from happening,
