Impaired Driving

My daughter was born in Clewiston Florida on the south end of the lake.

I think many of us have had relatives or neighbors that served as the example of why not to drink to excess. Some blamed their occupation like house painters, others the loss of a loved one. My mother called those excuses B as in B but in fairness I think there is a genetic link. So I just don’t. Still bars and pubs can be fun places.

Easiest way to solve complex Boolean expressions is with Karnaugh maps. I’m sure @Triedaq taught that in college. I was taught it in college in Discrete Math class (undergrad and Graduate school).

I hope that’s a typo. It’s C++
And the next logical step would be Java or C#. Both are far better languages then C++. ADA was a Flop. It had features of an object language, but only if you wanted to use it. Java and C# are far better more modern languages.

Back to Cars (a little). The most widely used computer languages used by the ECU is C or C++. These systems aren’t that complex and a language like C is used. C++ is also very popular since it’s backwards compatible to C. And you get the added features of an object oriented language.

My oldest friend, from my undergraduate days, is now “dry”, but he was a really severe alcoholic for over 20 years. It was so bad at work one day that his employer involuntarily sent him to a drying-out facility. I don’t think that an employer could legally do this today, but–all the same–they probably saved his life and they definitely saved his job.
And, both his mother and his father were severe alcoholics.

Each state is different, but most states have a way to involuntarily commit someone who is a danger to themselves or others. In Pennsylvania it is called a 302 commitment (a voluntary commitment ie where the patient is seeking treatment themselves usually for psych, but could be dual diagnosis too is called a 201 commitment). Anyone in PA can 302 someone. They’re taken to a local ER to have a psych evaluation performed then the ER MD or the Psychiatrist can either uphold or overturn a 302.

In almost all large companies (or small ones like mine) require employees to agree to random drug and alcohol tests. If you fail - you’re terminated. Drug tests are also mandatory for employment. Even though Marijuana is legal in most states now
if you work for the Federal government or on federal contracts then a positive Marijuana test is also grounds for dismissal. Since my company does do some Federal contracts we have to abide by those rules
even if the person won’t be working on the Federal contracts.

In all my years as a manager I’ve only had to deal with one failed drug test for my employee. Gave him a chance to with drug counseling and multiple follow-up tests. Never failed the test again during the probation period. I have had to resend offer letters for people who failed an employment drug screening. Far more then I liked.

Hmmm
 Interesting!
Because he was a RR Conductor, he was clearly a danger to his passengers when he was falling-down drunk, and I suppose that this was the basis for his involuntary commitment.

drunk as a RR Conductor?? Yikes
Yes I would definitely consider him a danger to others

Unfortunately, yes. I had wondered why he wasn’t able to get a job as a teacher, as all of our classmates had, but he later revealed that he was drunk when he went for all of those job interviews. He got the RR job because of some sort of family connection, but eventually the RR lost patience with him.

Probably because it’s terrible. All the focus is on making a dense foam head, and somewhere along the lines they forgot about, you know, flavor. Plus it’s like drinking a pork chop. Half a beer and I’m full.

Much better UK import is Old Speckled Hen, which gets bonus points because it’s named after a car.

I’ve said it before, but this topic infuriates me from both ends, so I say it whenever the opportunity arises. I think the laws are both too lax and too strict. They’re too lax because the penalties aren’t nearly strict enough in many states - there are people in my state with more than 10 DUIs who are still wandering around free, and driving.

On the other hand, the legal threshold for determining if you’re driving drunk is also lunacy. It’s absolutely absurd that if I’m drunk, and standing somewhere in the vicinity of my car with the keys in my pocket, I am legally driving drunk. Even though I am not driving and have no intention of driving. You should have to actually be doing, or at least attempting to do, a banned activity before you get in trouble for doing it.

The example I often bring up is a guy in my state who got a DUI for sleeping. He was home in his apartment and got drunk. He went down to his car to get something out of it, and ended up falling asleep in the car. A neighbor saw him passed out and called the cops, thinking he might be having a medical problem. The cop showed up and despite knowing he wasn’t driving, and admitting in the police report that he knew he couldn’t have been driving because the engine was cold, charged him with DUI anyway. And the guy was convicted, and lost on appeal.

That’s ridiculous and it needs to change.

It was the Brickskeller, located at DuPont Circle, in the basement of a hotel. We used to go there in the 1970s and 1980s. Amazing beer selection. We used to select beers for each other. Their buffalo burgers were unique for the time, quite good, and served with buffalo chips. It closed in 2010 when the owners sold the hotel (they owned both). My wife went with us several times, and she drank Coke too. No problem with that if it’s what you prefer.

Thank you. I knew that didn’t sound right.

And in upstate NY (33 )
Molson CANADIAN was another fav in the Syracuse region.
And of course Genese. A story from my mom; she and dad were out driving around with her parents and her mom asked why are there soo many towns called Genese? They had plastered the roads with little oval signs with just the word Genese on them.

Gin is commonly flavored with Juniper Berries. The base is some kind of neutral spirits.
Either way “shaken and not stirred.” would be James Bond’s preference. Likely because the more diluted product would make it look like he was drinking more and so deceive his foes into thinking his thinking was clouded. Or not.

Only thing Genesee GOOD made by them was their Cream Ale. Matts was very popular in Syracuse. They use to sell Beer Balls. Great to get a couple for the team after a Softball game.

At one point about 40 years ago the region around Syracuse was the Beer capital of the US. Genesee, Bud and Miller all had large breweries in the area. And Syracuse was also just at the North-Eastern edge of second largest Wine region in the country. Drinking was a huge past time during those long cold winters.

Gin is essentially vodka that is flavored with Juniper Berries and other botanicals.

I owe a few rounds for missing this when I was away, but can we try to get this a bit more back to cars and driving? Thanks. :wine_glass::beers::cup_with_straw::cocktail::woozy_face:

So there I was driving, got distracted by nude beer waiting for the condensation to make the bikini disappear!
