If I don't use AC, will there be no AC maintenance?

Not all vehicles operate the compressor while using the defroster, which vehicle were you discussing?

I did not say that the 87 Reliant was the first or last to have flow through ventilation. It was just the first one I owned without it. I believe GM got rid of it earlier to sell more A/C.

(see what I mean, folks?)

We were speaking in general terms, on another car forum.

I’d still wager a bet that on more than half of all vehicles equipped with an A/C comp, the defogger mode utilizes it.

Got rid of which - the Reliant, or flow-through ventilation?

The original poster of that link was probably a bot.

ā€˜Automotive Forums’ (Igor Sushko’s site, he used to race, probably still does) is headed completely down the tollet, because adminstration over there refuses to take the migration over to social media, and the influx of bots, seriously.

Three out of every four new ā€˜members’, since about three years, is an automated, cross-posting bot, probably from Whoknowswheristan.

I suspect most cars do operate the ac when in defrost. Fairly easy to tell if the compressor kicks on or not. The only thing is there is a cold temp switch, at least in mine, that won’t allow the compressor to come on if it is freezing out, like in Minnesota in the winter. My only point was I think it is silly to have it and not use it. The cost is really not much.

Nice little read, but you have to read past just the one post… lol

Yes as a rule of thumb, or most (key word most) of the automotive vehicles run the A/C while in def mode partly to keep everything lubricated during the off A/C seasons, while the other reason is to dehumidify the air, as blowing dry, warm air onto the cold windshield clears condensation/fog much faster and more effectively than just warm humid air… and yes for safety reasons, some/most/all use pressure switches to keep from damaging the A/C below x temps…

This is NOT a blanket statement as there are exceptions to every rule…

And since we are mostly in the US market, I am not talking about the rest of the world, not their, don’t care what they do in their market… and I really don’t care if I used their/there correctly, this is car talk, not an English course forum… lol

Dave- your english is just fine, even with a southern accent.

No. Most likely the compressor is run from the serpentine. If you remove it you’d need to find a new smaller belt and make sure it routes correctly. If you just want to prevent the AC from coming on why not just pull off the connection to the clutch? No dubious mechanical changes. But I still think ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– . On a hot summer day I’ll pull out of the relatively cool garage and drive with the windows down and the sunroof open, and AC off. But after grocery shopping for example, I’ll hop back in the car and close everything and run the AC because the car is now 120 degrees inside. Plus I’ll second the usefulness of the AC running in defrost.

Edit; Looks like they censored a word above - synonymous with ā€œnot smartā€.

What kind of nonsense now from George ?

Like you, I’ve noticed that George is back, but I’m never quick enough to be able to read his new posts before he deletes them.

A serious question I must ask:

Why do you ask a question like that, and what’s the motivation behind it?

I asked politely remember.

George has Never left, he is here almost everyday lurking in the shadows, he also has posted then deleted many many times…

In the last 3 months, he has given 51 Likes, and been here 81 out of 92 days, Topics viewed = 485 and Post read = 4.2K…

So, to rephrase Volvo’s question…
What exactly is George’s shtick at this point?

Why continue to post, but then quickly delete those posts?

Now that kind sir is the question of the day, I have been wondering the same thing for a while now… I haven’t a clue…

My theory, which is just my best guess, is that he wants it known that he’s… lurking.

If the person George replied to has Email notification turned on, they can read the message in the Email.

Same effect as using private message, however PM was crippled for a while (unreliable).

SOOOOO… Getting back to the topic of this thread, AC USE.

I would guess that the majority of cars that do not run the A/C comp for Defogger do not have A/C as a feature in the first place. Like my high school ā€˜71 Chevelle: Big honkin’ V8, roll-down window air conditioning, no defog, and no electric rear Defroster.
