I ran a stopped school bus

Instead of obsessing on this topic–in this forum–you should contact all of your state legislators to tell them that this law is “ridiculous”, and that you want it amended or eliminated. Please report back to us with the result.

Only for discussion. Sorry if I come across as annoying.

They won’t listen to me really. lol. I also read that this particular law receives over millions in dollars in fines. It sure is a way for the government to put its hands in our pocket.

Not being from around here, you should know that each state adopts its own traffic laws.

Have you communicated your concerns to your state representaves?
If not, why not?
The worst that can happen is that they will tell you that your perceptions are wrong.
If you don’t express your concerns to them, then nothing is likely to change.
Obviously, expressing your concerns to them is not a guaranteed way to change existing regulations, but continuing to flog this VERY dead horse in this forum will not result in any sort of change in the state’s traffic regulations.

I just found out they are actually trying to address the problem: Senator Proposes Change To School Bus Stop Laws | News, Sports, Jobs - Post Journal.

Interesting. Such a change might be possible. However if anyone benefits from the current law, they will likely attempt to stop any change, at least in the short term. It’s politics after all.

We have a politico in this area that sometimes ask for citizen opinions on needed law changes. Part of his questioneer he requires for his consideration of the change: Are there any groups that benefit by the existing law, and will likely oppose this change?

Yes, absolutely I would hire an attorney. That’s the sort of punishment I expect for a DUI/DWI.

And as the great Senator Jay Billington Bulworth so bluntly admitted, your elected officials won’t give you the time of day, because you aren’t rich, and you can’t give them what they want. “You make your contribution and you’ll get your solution. As long as you can pay, I’m gonna do it all your way. Yes, the money talks, and the people walk…”

(And yes, I know “Bulworth” was intended as a comedy, not a documentary, but it’s spot-on accurate nowadays.)

Money talk and Bullsomething other than Bulworth walks…!

@Clueless33 ,
Please just stop, you are proving your screen name is correct

The only people in support of the current law are those who are ineligible for a driver license based on observation and comments made on Reddit and Quora.

I was trying to find the comment but couldn’t relocate it but one lady said: “ The law is fine as it is. I don’t even have children or a driver license and I’m in support of this law. “

Heck, I wonder how those huge 18 wheelers manage to stop for a school bus on a divided highway!

I always hear truckers say it takes longer to stop their trucks compared to an ordinary vehicle.

Of course, what you said here is true — people are going to oppose changing this rule because it’s all politics.

Because of their higher vantage point. Has little to do with their stopping ability.

Because unlike you, they know they have to stop.

Based on my own experiences, I disagree.
Quite a few years ago, I requested a personal meeting with my Congressman, in his local office. That meeting was granted, and I was able to sit down with him for about 15 minutes. No secretaries or other aides were present. It was just me and my Congressman.

The purpose of my meeting was to ask him to intervene with the US Army, in order to have my brother’s request for relocation to a different base (which had already been rejected by my brother’s commanding officer) approved. In about 3 weeks, my brother was able to be relocated to a base much closer to his wife and infant son.

More recently, I communicated with my NJ State Senator regarding my concerns about the state pension system. He invited me to his office, and we chatted for a few minutes about the issue that concerned me. Subsequently, he introduced a bill in the NJ Senate related to my concerns. While it didn’t pass, at least he listened to me and he took action.

Was there some reason the wife and infant son could not move to where he was stationed? Your brother should have been discharged for you taking this action.

He should have been discharged because I–independent of him–made this request to my Congressman? Really?

His wife was a non-tenured teacher during a period when it was very difficult to get teaching positions, and her mother took care of the infant while she was at work. Things aren’t quite as simple as they may seem to the uniformed.

I actually think the NY law is fairly clear. Living in NC, it is somewhat confusing. Check my previous post. I was driving the left straight through lane when a bus at this intersection coming towards me stopped. I stopped. Note the median starts just ahead and there is no median behind me. The car behind me almost rear-ended me. Scary stuff.

Informative post @PintoKid . It seems like the safety problem w/stops like that could be simply averted by common sense, the bus stopping elsewhere, like on a nearby side street.

My only experience w/NC, I visited the Winstom-Salem area on a business trip, and I got a chance to take a tour of one of the local cigarette factories. Pretty interesting. And pretty smelly! The factory I mean … lol … Beautiful country. They gave me a free pack at the end of the tour, but I don’t smoke. I never found Mayberry, but I did see Mt Pilot on the map.
