Re: pricing at dealer vs elsewhere
Just paid $18.95 plus tax at the dealership parts window. Easily changed it myself.

Thatās my kind of woman!
What good does filtering down to 5 microns do if you can pass a bowling ball through the side window?
Simple!
The passenger compartment is always under positive pressure.
Where the outside air is always under negative pressure.
Thatās why cigarette smoke always goes out the window as soon as itās opened.
So, even if the window is open, the air is going to go thru the cabin filter, into the passenger compartment, and then out the open window.
Simple fluid dynamics.

I see them as more of way to keep junk/dirt out of the HVAC system.
Many moons ago compressed air was free. The original "pay per puff " machines appeared in this area about 20 years ago and were 25 cents for 5 minutes. Similar to the 25 cent 5 minute self service car washes. The last time I used a car wash about 5 years ago it required $2.50! I had 1 tire a bit low 3 years ago and paid $1 for 2 minutes with a barely functional nozzle. The gas station attendant informed me the machine did not belong to them. They were a vending machine like drinks or snacks. The days of actual service stations is unfortunately history. The Chevron service station I worked at when I was 19 years old 1971-1972 asked customers if they wanted their tires and oil checked. All windshields were cleaned while we pumped their 25 cents a gallon leaded regular gas unless the customer declined. The station had 2 lifts plus a tune-up bay with a Sun diagnostic machine. We even went as far as valve jobs. The head shop was only 2 blocks away. There was no need for having a convenience store as the 7/11 was 3 blocks away. The āgood old daysā really were.
Many of the filling stations around here still have a 1 or 2 bay repair shop attached to them
Some of them even manage to stay very busy
Iām guessing itās word of mouth, as some of these shops specialize in a particular type of
Iāll go a little off-topic now
That filling station Iāve mentioned in the past . . . the one that charges about 50 cents more/gallon than ANYBODY else in the area . . . their business seems to finally be drying up. Itās increasingly common to drive by there, and see absolutely no cars there, whereas all the other filling stations have at least a few cars there at all times. And itās at a busy intersection, so location is not a problem.
Iām actually quite please by this development. Serves the owner right. If you charge WAY too much, and have absolutely nothing to offer for that rip-off price, then you SHOULD go under. Even if heās the best employer in the world, heās still charging too much, and by a very wide margin
In the back of my mind, I still think the guy might be using the gas station to write off losses from his other business dealings, or it may be a front for some shady activities
Or maybe the guy is just plain stupid and/or crazy. You donāt need a business degree to realize something isnāt right with this picture
That would not work with my 2010 Kia Forte. The only key access locks are ignition and driverās door. Since nearly all vehicles have an interior release for trunk or hatch a valet key would only be useful for the glove box or console but not for me.
While there is truth to the above statement, donāt forget that anytime a window is open, lots of outside air comes into the passenger compartment, rendering the cabin filterās filtration mute.
