Humming noise, differential?

Hi. My 2000 Dodge Durango has about 45K miles on it.

Recently a humming noise started coming from the front end. It is only there while moving/accelerating. It is not there while braking etc.

I suspect the front differential. Is this a dangerous issue or more of an annoyance that I can keep driving on? Thanks.

If the differential goes, you’re looking at an expensive repair. Pop the filler plug and check the fluid level. It should be just about level with the bottom of the filler hole. You should also change the fluid if it hasn’t been done already. Check the owner’s manual for the proper viscosity.

There are other potential sources of humming, including the wheel bearings and the tires.
