They still get to use pure non ethanol gasoline for the fuel economy testing though!
The reason they did that in the 70’s was because the pumps weren’t equipped to charge over 99 cents. I don’t think they’ll do that again.
I meant the comment as a joke. It suggests that some people would be fooled by the change into thinking gas is cheaper.
People around here don’t seem to be affected by the current fuel prices. They tool around like no tomorrow gunning and roaring their engines and racing to the next red light.
I follow buckin billy, a tree cutter up in west Canada. He and his buddy have been driving cross country to Ontario. They stopped for gas and the 88 liters cost them $201. Canadian I suppose, but still my calculations put that at $8 a gallon. I thought they should have dropped down to the us instead.
I
Might have cost Billy more to make the detour than he would save in the price of gas. Firs is the additional gas used for the detour and then the opportunity cost lost when he could have been cutting trees.
I know people who will drive around looking for the cheapest gas. Some use an app so they can go right to the cheapest station but I still feel that they are spending more doing this. Also the opportunity cost of working as you mention if they work for themselves or are paid by the hour. Also, you need time for yourself and I would rather not just be driving around. Same with groceries. I go to like 3x different stores but always on a different day and usually when I am near the one I want to hit. I don’t make a special trip out of my way. Nowawadays you have to go several places to buy everything you need because it seems like 20% of stuff is missing. This is also frustrating but sometimes I just substitute another product or flavor.
+1
Between the folks who think that their accelerator pedal and brake pedal are designed for “all on/all off” use, and those who sit idling their engines for 15-20 minutes while doing something with their cell phones, it would seem that many folks have no clue about how to maximize their gas mileage.
While it doesn’t amount to a huge improvement in my gas mileage, accelerating more slowly has enabled me to add ~1.5 mpg to my average. And, as soon as I park the car, the engine is shut off immediately.
He was being demanding and being cheap and then expected them to know that he was just kidding.
Being cheap and too demanding/unreasonable are the two least liked qualities customers can have and you had both of them going on simultaneously.
I would not bother them in the future. Just don’t joke with them and don’t try to teach them humor.
Remember you might think you’re being absurd and that they should figure out that you couldn’t possibly be serious, so that’s an indication of joking, when they deal with the seriously absurd every day. They can’t assume anyone’s joking.
Throttle mapping is rarely linear.
I mean pushing 50% halfway down on the pedal won’t necessarily give you 50% throttle.
It might it might not it depends on the car. And if it did that wouldn’t guarantee that then when you push 3/4 down that you’re going to be getting close to 75% power or something equivalent.
One of the tricks that manufactures will do to make a lot of these four-cylinder family sedans seem more responsive is to program in a lot of initial throttle.
They might be pushing only a quarter of the way on that fuel panel and the computer is responding by giving them closer to 40% or nearly half of full throttle.
As for the brakes. Most cars now use some form of brake assist.
This came about because in an analysis of rear end crashes of several years. Investigators notice something very unusual that most of the vehicles that had the accident should have been able to stop in time.
They found that drivers did not apply sufficient force early enough. That most drivers failed to accurately judge their stopping distances so they were not applying the correct amount of force and as they came close to the car it became apparent that they needed more force and then when they did apply sufficient for us it was too little too late to stop the crash.
So this brought about brake assist. If you’re quick on the brakes and push 3/4 down. That computer might assume that you need full force and give it to you.
For the driver following behind I think that what they are seeing is just an already bad drivers excessive inputs being exaggerated by the computer.
Next thing you know, Smith&Wesson is going to start making 5-shooters.
