(Helpful?) suggestion for the Boltbreaker (2-22-2014)

I’d like to offer a suggestion for the caller who frequently breaks bolts while working on his car. (2-22-2014)

I suggest heating up the engine by running it and turning it off just before unbolting the coolant pump. Perhaps that will cause the engine to expand enough to make loosening the bolts easier. Before turning a wrench on that hot engine, however, put on some heat-resistant gloves.

If it’s feasible and safe, you could do likewise with the brakes by driving the car around the neighborhood and braking frequently.
