While I too occasionally get annoyed with a reply, I’m sure I do my share of annoying - not intentionally, but I’m sure it happens. It’s inherent with any online forum.
I’m convinced, however, that if I were working alongside those same people, those annoyances would disappear, we’d learn from our differences, and have fun going out for a beer after work.
It’s an older design website. With some of the new tools today…it’s easy to create a website that is friendly for any viewing device (Desktop, laptop, tablet, smart-phone). A few years ago it was a lot harder…you almost had to create different screens for each of the different devices.
@PvtPublic–no need to apologize. When I saw my post with one agree and one disagree, I realized that I was in balance. It made my day to realize that I am in balance.
Hello. I’m very late to this discussion, and I’m sorry about that. The ratings have been divisive at times, and while we acknowledge and understand the system isn’t perfect (yup, that’s a lot of options to choose from) but it is what we have. As resources permit, we work with Vanilla to customize what we have in our community. Now, as for the philosophical arguments for or against the presence of the ratings…I think they must be taken with a very healthy dose of perspective. From what I can see, they’re used, but not extensively so. They are but one of the different ways people signal their agreement with or respect for a comment. I see your point about encouraging downvote trolling, but I don’t see the effects here that are so marked. I also think disagrees and flags shouldn’t be anonymous; if someone chooses not to explain or elaborate, then you can read more or less into it as you choose. It’s just another way of looking at the discussion.
In the rare case where I disagree without explanation, it is as Triedaq says. It is to warn the OP that the opinions stated are not black and white, but I do not feel like a childish argument at the moment… The thing I don’t like is when someone really gets on his ear because someone dared to disagree with him. I guess with my political views most of my life almost everyone disagrees with me on almost everything so I don’t sweat it.
I don’t have a problem with you. I’ve said that before.
You didn’t anonymously disagree with me 28 times, purely out of spite
And for the record, it’s been very one-sided. That individual really hammered me. Yet I could count the number of times I disagreed with him on one hand.
I don’t recall disagreeing with anybody. I do sometimes go off topic, but this is an internet forum not a calculus IV class, so I think we could add some humor and anecdotes to it. It might not sit well with someone who is waiting eagerly for a response to a car problem, but at least bumps the thread and gives it some more attention.
On the city-data forum, if you like someone’s response, you can rep them and you see everybody’s “rep’s” and I find that somewhat more useful.
@db4690…I removed all my “disagrees” from your name except for DexCool which is garbage. I didn’t do this because I necessarily agree with you…I did it to show how this useless Agree/Disagree function can be manipulated. I also dinged @cdaquila just to see if I could. I could so I did.
FYI…I have access to innumerable computers all over the Southeastern U.S. so I can become dozens of other “OP’s” that can ding anyone I choose to and still be anonymous. I won’t but I could if I decided I wanted to be a real pain on this forum. I will take the high road and just try to help the OP with my mechanical knowledge. I respect the majority of members here so I will put away my “Alexander Joseph Lex Luthor” side and continue on with business as usual.
