Have you been affected by the New Tariffs? I have…

My insurance agent used to do the training sessions for the discount, plus we got hot chocolate chip cookies during break. I thought there was value in group discussions with folks with a lot of miles under their belts. When he quit doing them, we took the online aarp program. I just thought they spent too much effort on non driving issues like monitoring grandmas driving, instead of actual driving issues. Our asst fleet manager also did the course some years ago and was pretty good.

You know, those types of driving courses are very helpful for new drivers, I’d imagine they can also help a few people who are already licensed. They’re very patient and some even have their own vehicles for you to take lessons in.

My cousin was quite fearful of driving when they turned 16, so my uncle enrolled them into one of the driving schools and was eventually able to control their fear of driving.

More than you might think. Airline pilots take repeated refresher courses to keep up their skills. Experience does not eliminate the need - one crash involved a very senior pilot who ignored the advice of his young co-pilot, and several hard-and-fast rules, because he thought he could handle the bad conditions. He couldn’t.

Like I said, I prefer a pilot that has been shot at a few times and a little gray hair around the edges.

AFAIK, every job title that requires certification has a proviso that the certificate holder has to take periodic updates/refresher courses. This applies to professional nurses, teachers, counselors, etc.

Yeah accountants too.

Story, repeat. My wife needed one CE credit. Our Alma mater was offering a one week course on CPM programming back in the day. She didn’t know what that was if only she would have asked me I would have said I’ve got a computer whiz that that’s all he uses.

So she went and like an English major in a space lab. The only way she made it through was her class partner was an IT pro and helped her through enough to pass. She was happy to come home again.

We had safety meetings at the start of every shift in the steel mill. The people that needed it most were the new employees and the ones with 20 or more years on the job. The young guys did not know and the old ones forgot where they were. 5 minutes of safety contact every day helped a lot.

A friend of mine was a Conductor on the PATH train (an interstate subway system), and he said that his oldest colleague could never quite figure-out the procedure for manually opening the doors in the event of a power outage. No matter how much extra safety training they gave that guy, he couldn’t retain the info for more than a day or so. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when he retired.

When we lived in NJ in the 1970s I rode the PATH subway from Jersey, under the Hudson River, and into the base of one of the old Trade Towers. Far easier than driving into Manhattan, although I’ve done that too.

Absolutely!
I haven’t gone to the city for a couple of years, but when I do go, I park in the Port Authority Parking garage in Jersey City, and when I get to Manhattan, either I walk from the PATH to my final destination or I take the NY Subway.

I think that the last time I drove into Manhattan was 30-35 years ago. I have been using the PATH train since then, in order to avoid the ridiculous traffic jams/cost of parking and–now–Congestion Pricing. Nope, no driving in NYC for me… except on the NY highways I have to use if I drive someone to JFK Airport.

The value of the wood for your project just jumped up. If you already paid, or you already had a contract and they already purchased at the lower price, then they should continue at the agreed price. I can see why they would want to cancel now that the lumber price jumped up. Better for them to take a break and then once their competitors finally have to raise prices then they can get back in the game at the higher price.

The 10% universal tariff in addition to existing tariffs would put the USA in the top 40 countries with the highest tariffs on imports.

If the electronics from China which are exempted from the 10% baseline tariff are not exempted for other countries, then that gives China an unfair advantage. I don’t know if this is the case or not.

The professional engineer’s license require continuing education credits every year. But a PE is not required for every engineering position.

Yep, tariffs raise the price of everything pretty much the moment they’re put in place, including non-tariff competition.

It was very similar here on the Patco train. When the line first opened in 1969 train operators from Philly’s Septa system were given hiring preference, and the ones that came over were mostly older. Management gave a sigh of relief when those guys retired in the 1970’s and 80’s. They simply wouldn’t accept instruction.

Northern NH is being affected by the tariffs more than most areas. They are very isolated and rely on trading with Canada just to survive. Several farmers said they won’t survive even a year at the current rate.

The folks who work at West coast ports are already affected by the arrival of far-fewer ships. Also affected at this point are the truckers and trucking companies that rely on imports for much of their trucking income. This pattern will inevitably lead to a shortage of both parts and retail goods in The US if it continues.

I listened to a podcast where an Iowa soybean farmer was interviewed. She is the head of the soybean association and has a good working relationship with China. At least she did until recently. The tariffs between the US and China caused her to lose 60% of her sales instantly when her Chinese customers cut her and all other US suppliers off. Hopefully the issues are ironed out and she can restart selling to China again.

I did make a purchase of an item I had been delaying. Was slated to increase by a minimum of $60. Not a required purchase, just something I wanted.

What has already directly affected me has been the cuts to the VA.

Fwiw . . . I think cuts to the VA are DESPICABLE

Ah, but the tariffs and agency cuts (who needs food to be safe?) are going to make us rich!

Edit: Counting the minutes until I am flagged!
