Happy 4th of July Everyone!

Similar sighting recently, didn’t get a picture but a hudson hornet rat rod pulled into the costco lot the other day to load up, then left.

Nor would I, but…

Anyway, I thought that this Merc looked like something a bit larger than a 190.

I zoomed in and it was indeed a 190E

The S-Class of the time had similar looks, but different tail lamps and side mouldings

A coworker of mine bought a used S-class sometime back in the '90s. I didn’t say it at the time, but I thought that it was… not a good idea. Within ~7 months, after getting several eye-popping repair bills, she got rid of it.

Do you happen to know if it was the square-looking S-class from the 1980s, or the later one that was big as a whale, from the early 90s?

Either way, they’re both extremely expensive to keep going

All I recall is that it was so big that it had two antenna-like things that would pop out of the rear fenders when you put it into reverse. Without those “guides”, it was close to impossible for the driver to see the rear fenders.

That would be the '91 - '98 W140 S class, you can see the antenna tops in the rear fenders:

Yup, it was like that one. In addition to the astronomical repair costs, she was shocked by the lousy gas mileage. She said that her previous car, a Jag sedan, was more economical. Yes, she was a serial buyer of ill-advised used cars.

Did the old S-class have air suspension? IIRC, one of her incredibly expensive repair bills was for suspension repairs.

Some of those had air suspension

Usually the S500 and S600

I think it was a 600.

Good grief

They were very nice

But money pits

And incredibly expensive new. Was S600 the designation for the Maybach level back then as it has been more recently?

Her Benz didn’t have the Maybach badge. I think that Benz didn’t start using that old trademark until more recently.

Benz bought-out Maybach in the '60s, but I think it was much later that they began using its name on their most upscale models.

2003 Maybach 57 or the lwb 67 were heavily s class based but a completely separate division and dealer network. 2013 was the final model year.

The more recent Maybach models are upgraded versions of various Mercedes models such as the s class or eqs Maybach in dealer showrooms today

Our sumer festtival by the lake wraps up tonight with fiŕeworks. Owner of this street parked stidebaker pu must have been checking out the food trucks and carnival rides a block over.
