GMC rear brake backing plate replacement

I have a 2000 GMC Sierra Z-71 half ton 4by4. The rear brake backing plates need to be replaced. Do I need to remove the axles to do this, and if I do, are the axles secured within the differential with clips? Thanks, Sig

Of course it depends on the axle installed in the truck, but generally, yes, the axle will need to be removed to get the backing plate off. A lot of GM axles require clips to be removed from the differential to remove the axles, and the pinion shaft for the spider gears typically lock in the clips to prevent them from falling out.
