Future CAFE standards Fallacy

Where at ? not around here ,the fruitbats and NIMBYS have fought wind turbines tooth and nail around here, since there was mention of their inception.(yet these same folks see nothing wrong with ugly power poles and hideous ,highly visible aluminum cables ,feeding their service drop .(follow the dollar on that one )
Some people would like to think they are the only people on earth ,the heck with other peoples children and needs …The earth is getting very crowded in places ,we need to share and get along ,Love ,not hate .

I think it’s more selfishness than hate.
“Hate” has become the new “you don’t agree with me”. A lot of people I know who like to brand the people who don’t agree with them as “haters” are actually consumed with hate themselves.
“No one beholds hypocrisy so keenly as another hypocrite”, I have always said.

People often behave strangely! A while back a well off lady in Wales went on a campaign against those ugly windmills. Wales was once a leading coal mining area and those collieries had ugly mine head frames and ugly slag heaps. Lung cancer was rampant among coal miners then and still is.

Electric power in Wales now comes from coal imported from the US and from gas fired power plants. Windmills will make a minor contribution.

I was in a supermarket during the time Chavez was organizing California farm workers. A lady shopping there told me not to buy California grapes, since farm workers there were exploited. Instead she was buying grapes from South Africa, still under Apartheid and grapes there were picked by truly exploited workers.

I hate to say it, but I’m not seeing a whole lot of sharing and love in this statement. :smiling_imp:

What happened in the 70’s and 80’s was the SUV, a “truck” that didn’t count against the CAFE numbers. So we got rid of the station wagon, which didn’t make much profit for the car companies and replaced it with something that got even worst mileage, with less safety, polluted more and made more profit.

Yea, we did get some poorly built cars, or cars that were re-badge from the Japanese auto makers but in the end it didn’t do any real good with the way the rules were written.

What we got in the late 70’s and 80’s was a bunch of downsized “full size” cars that couldn’t match the capabilities of those old full size sedans and wagons. Pickup trucks were not generally available with 4 doors in the half-ton models so they couldn’t be used to take the family camping or boating. The downsized wagons had weak engines with low tow ratings so Dad bought Mom a Suburban that seats 8 or 9 and can tow a boat or travel trailer. Car buyers became truck buyers.

The EPA mandates pushed people into SUV’s and trucks because they needed the capacity and wanted the size. They then found out the high seating position was a desirable thing and the manufacturers started making them more car-like in ride and more luxurious in options. They were as profitable as the full size wagons and sedans they used to sell (contrary to the previous post - big wagons made money, lots of it).

The government can mandate most anything to the manufacturers but they can’t force people to buy the product. The unintended consequences of CAFE was the migration to trucks and SUV’s.

I see Infiniti has a 2.0 turbo model for the q50 sedan now. Is it better than the lousy 2.5 v6 model they had? Well, u can mod the turbo so we got that going now.

Excellent point… and the absolute truth.
A tip of the hat to you. :grinning:

The SUV wasnt the vehicle of choice til the 90s. In the 79s and 80 s it was the minivans.

When I was a kid, the only people that had pick up trucks were the ones that used them in their jobs, such as for construction. Everybody else had a regular sized car that could pull a boat or a trailer and seat six people. The landscape is a little different now.

Yes, when we were married in 1967 none of my friends and colleagues had a truck. My distant brother had one since he had a small construction business.

I remember loading a full size sofa on top of our Dodge Dart 2 door hardtop and transporting it over 120 miles from my father in law’s place to our new home. Sofas are tricky in a crosswind!!

The Dart had a 273 cu inch V8 and heavy duty springs, so it towed a small camper for many years. I also installed an auxiliary transmission cooler.

Our son is planning to buy a small camper and will need a rear drive vehicle to safely pull it around North America, since he takes long vacation trips. He’ll likely end up with a Toyota 4Runner or Tacoma.

Pickups and SUVs were quite utilitarian and offerred little in the way of comfort and luxury until the the mid 80s. International Harvester’s Travelall was an attempt at making a grand station wagon based on a truck but was a total failure. Pre 80s pickups, Suburbans, Travelalls, Scouts, etc., were usually bare bones vehicles with manual transmissions sold to the commercial market. Of course there were El Caminos and Rancheros for those who wanted a well equipped pickup.I believe it was the EPA’s CAFE standards that pushed the SUVs that were classified as trucks onto the market to replace station wagons. The Jeep Cherokee led the way.

Man, I’m with you on that one. I wish I had stocked up more than I did on incandescent bulbs. For me, it is not only all the reasons you cite that should have kept them in production, but also that they come on immediately, and help warm the room. And rather than really pushing conserving light usage, now more lights are being used by the continued ignorant who think - what they hey - these lights use less so I can use more. Me, on the other hand, use few lamps, and turn lights on and off. if they aren’t needed. I’ve written to “the Government” at least eight times. But appealing to the lowest common denominator is what everything is all about now, right? And sure, it was just fine and dandy to promote mercury-filled bulbs no matter the danger to people who had difficulty maneuvering, or that children might handle and drop them. Not to mention the extraction of mercury and the manufacturing exposure, and disposal. Idiocy.
