Fuel injection cleaner - does it really work

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you.

I’m just messing with ya. The EPA does have detergent requirements for gasoline:

Unfortunately, he passed away awhile back

Anyone try the EPA site???

Or maybe the SEA site?

Or other sites.

10 years ago if you asked me about fuel injector cleaner…I’d say it’s not needed at all. The biggest way to keep dirt from getting to the filters is to replace the filter. But that’s not an option today in many vehicles with their back-flush systems and a filter that’s inside the gas tank. I’m not a big fan of this systems (although I haven’t had a problem yet). What I liked about the older systems was every time I replaced the filter I’m removing dirt from the fuel system. But with these new systems…the dirt is NEVER removed…it’s always in the system…but hopefully it never makes it out of the gas tank.

Back in the day when there was only one fuel injector you could use one can of cleaner a year. Now that there are four to eight times more injectors you can use one can a year. The other choice is to use one can every four, six or eight years because the injectors are doing a lot less work.

You can be liberal or conservative. You can be outvoted and still do anything you want. I like that kind of deal.

I’ve had one car that needed and reacted well to injector cleaner. The car would run a little rough and be hard to start. One bottle of Techron in the tank and the car runs and starts fine.

I use Techron in my truck to fix the gas gauge. The sender must get coated with something during the changeover from summer to winter gas that makes the gauge read very low even when full. Sometimes takes 2 tankfuls.

Yikes!
Now you want somebody who has been dead for almost two years to be Defense Secretary?

@MikeInNH - thanks for the links, the Scripps article is eye-opening, confirming my use of “Top Tier” gas in my cars. Based on that, my advice on additives would be to add a dose of Techron once a year, if you’re not using a Top Tier gas. If you are, then I’m not going to worry about it.

One thing, the EPA link has the list of allowed additives, not the minimum content specification. I still haven’t found that on the EPA site.

I have never used additives nor cared about tier of fuel in 25 years of driving.

In the 150k-250k range when I sell cars they run quite well and never had fuel problems.

IMHO akin to safe tap water vs bottled. No “nutrient” benefits just more cost.
