Ford Ranger Loss of Power Power Steering Pump

I have a '95 Ford Ranger, 208,000 miles, manual transmission. It’s always run well but about four weeks ago I began to have a loss of acceleration. This had gotten so bad now that I can’t drive it. I can’t make it up the smallest hill; and top speed is about 30 mph. I’ve taken it to the Ford service center here, and they say it’s because my power steering pump is going bad and has to be replaced. Sounds odd to me; but what do I know! Does this sound right to anyone? The repair is about 450.00.

Would not buy that one either. Sounds like cat is clogged. If you want to eliminate their crazy diagnosis, losen the p/s belt and drive it.

Ask them for an explanation. If they say the pump is leaking fluid tell them you want the performance problem diagnosed first before you will consider any extra work.

You need to replace your Ford service center. They know not of what they speak. Try a good independent mechanic and +1 for knfenimore because I believe he is right.

Thanks everyone; knfenimore, by “cat” do you mean the catalytic converter or something else. Probably a dumb question.

Yup

“cat” is short for catalytic converter
