My son drives a '93 Ford Explorer. At random and sporadic times, it won’t start. A mechanic recently replaced his fuel pump, stating it was a common ailment with these vehicles, but that was not the problem. Anyone have any history with tis problem?
yes my sister-inlaw had a 01 there was throttle position plate in the fuel injection if you pumped the gas it would start then you had to keep a foot on the gas to keep it running
Fuel pump failure is only a common problem on vehicles in which the fuel filter is not changed regularly or a vehicle in which the pump is simply worn out; with the former often causing the latter.
There’s not enough info to narrow the guessing down since we do not know if the problem is fuel or spark related. Ignition module, coil, ignition switch, pump relay, ECM fault, etc. are only a few possibilities.
Has anyone pulled the codes on this vehicle? There are some things that can cause a no-start condition and may leave something in the Continuous Monitor (or Wiggle test as it’s called). This could include a pump primary lead, PIP signal, etc.
At this point about all I can suggest is keep a can of aersol carb cleaner handy and when it will not start give the intake a healthy shot followed by attempting to start the vehicle. If it starts for a few seconds then you have a fuel pump power supply issue more than likely. If not, probably in the ignition circuitry.
