F250 Clutch release problem

I have a 1988 F250 XLT, 2WD, Gas. When I release the clutch, I hear a loud noise/thump. Seems to happen in all gears but most pronounced in the upper gears. Any ideas?

Does it make any noise when you release the clutch in neutral? Have you checked the motor mounts? If it still has the mechanical linkage (not hydraulic) check the clutch-arm cross-shaft that goes between the frame and the bellhousing. Is it loose and flopping around? Have you ever greased it?

It does make a similar noise in neutral. I have never greased anything related to the clutch. Could it be related to the driveshaft?

Also check the center carrier bearing in the driveshaft. When the rubber wears out, it can flop around in the mount and make lots of interesting noises.

Thanks for the info. I will take it to my transmission guy and have him take a look. Good to have a few starting points prior to taking it in.

The driveshaft does not rotate in neutral…Good Luck at the tranny shop…
