My brake calipers are very rusty. Was thinking about evapoelrust, and painting. But after thinking about it longer, I’m questioning if this is a good idea. The piston and bore are a highly polished surface that needs to be smooth. Wouldn’t evaporust etch the piston bore and the piston, resulting in none smooth surface?
I wouldn’t dip a caliper. You could mask off sensitive areas with the caliper still assembled and media blast it, then repaint. Or use a rust converter product like POR-15.
I’d price out new calipers. But I actually wouldn’t worry about caliper rust.
How does someone with 2 kids in car seats have time to worry about normal rust on calipers ?
If you dunk the entire assembled caliper with the pistons in and retracted and seals intact it would clean the rust and not damage the bores.
You would have to replace the seals afterwards.
But why do this at all? Painted calipers are only to look pretty sitting behind fancy open spoke wheels. It isn’t really a functional thing. And you don’t paint the sliding surfaces for any reason because it will cause sticking where you don’t want it.
