Engine Starts then dies- Only Sometimes though

Ok. The only thing I know about cars is how to drive them and when to get the oil changed. Here’s my problem-

When I turn on the engine, it will start and then die a second later. If I give it a little bit of gas, it will stay on. This only happens once every few days at most. What could be wrong?

Tester

You are increasing the intake airflow when you open the throttle. The airflow could be reduced by accumulated “stuff” in the air passages of the idle air control valve, and on the throttle plate and bore.
Use a Throttle Body Cleaner in the intake tract to remove that “stuff” from those parts.

I am with Tester, go to repair guy and tell him you want him to clean throttle body and idle air control valve.
This should not cost more than $20-30.
If this does not work you may have to replace the IAC
Tester I think this is what you meant.
Unless you know or have friends that know them I would NOT use quick lube, transmission or tire stores.
