Next time you need to drive your car, turn the key to “on” but don’t start the engine. The check engine light should be turned on then. That’s normal. If you see it then, the bulb is ok. It should go out as soon as you start the engine. My Corolla is a 92 also, and uses OBD I diagnostics, like your XR2. The closest I’ve had to that same symptom was caused by a fault in the idle air control system. The check engine light didn’t turn on for that, even though the engine ran so poorly the car was barely drivable. I’ve never had a vacuum leak or an EGR system problem fortunately. The only time the check engine light has ever turned on indicating a problem was when I’d accidentally left a sensor disconnected.
