Engine Light on and stalls randomly for Honda Civic 2016

Hi,

My Honda Civic 2016 currently at 87K miles and it runs fine until the recent months.

First, the engine light was on about 8 months ago and stayed on. We changed the canister purge valve and it fixed engine light but only lasted for about a month before the light turned back on. Code reader displays error codes:

  • P0441: EVAP system purge malfunction
  • P04F1: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system low purge flow detected
  • P0456: EVAP System very small leak detected
  • U0151: Lost Communication with SRS Unity

Some forums recommend changing gas cap but the civic has a capless design and that part cannot be easily changed.

Then about 5 months ago, it starts stall randomly at low speed. So far, it has happened 4 times. Every time, it feels the engine choked for a second and then lost power afterwards.

I have to wait for about 20 mins before I can restart the engine.

Another clue is it seems the stall more likely to happen one day after I filled the gas. But since it happens rarely so I don’t have a lot of data to back it up.

Any suggestions on the next steps to diagnosis?

Could be a weak fuel pump. Clue is problem with full tank and intermittent stalling but I’m not a mechanic. Gotta check fuel pressure.

You may have an electrical issue, ground issue or corrosion somewhere… Or maybe even rodents chewing on wires…

Might be time to find a good automotive electrical shop to diagnose the issue or even the dealer…

Check the battery cable ends for corrosion and pull back the battery terminal cover(s) and check for corrosion in the wiring, check the grounds also… Make sure the battery is good, a new battery can be defective… Make sure the charging system is good also…

But most likely you are going to need a good scanner that can get into checking CAN bus and communication with/between the modules… Even wiring diagrams and ohm charts etc etc…

The stalling could be a crank sensor, or part of the possible wiring/corrosion issue…

Thank you both for your reply. After the third stall on the road in recent 2 months, I finally took it in to have it fixed. After the check, Honda dealer was not 100% sure about what is wrong but they did give me a $5K list to start with and mentioned this is not for sure to fix the issue. The most expensive part was MAF unit which quoted $1K. I was not impressed and decided to trade it in… but not Honda again! Will be looking for other brands.

PS: we owned 3 Honda previously and had no issues. This is our first new car and it gave us so many issues. As much as I love the Civic, I feel its quality has been going downhill… oh well maybe I just got unlucky.

Put this thread to a closure. I deeply appreciate your read and suggestions.

Thanks for the update, intermittent issues are some of the hardest issues to diagnose… Sorry you had the issue with your vehicle…

Although any manufacture can/will have issues with there vehicles, Toyota/Lexus seem to have about the least…
It is recommended to stay away from Euro’s… Mazda is another good manufacture… fwiw

@GorehamJ John it seems this person has requested that this dicussion be closed. Can you do that for them?
