Heck even the great GM 3.8L fuel injected engines would jump timing around 100K miles due to those cam gears that had a bonded outer layer of nylon on the teeth, and about 1/2 bent the valves…

I did many of those 60’s - 80 mainly GM (but others also) nylon geared timing chains, had to drop the oil pan on some to get all the old nylon gear chunks out… Other manufactures timing chains stretched and caused them to jump timing, some would bend the pushrods instead of the valves…

Yepers got to love those old timing chain days with the 100K mile chains…

I think my riviera 3.8 had about 250k when the chain went. Shop I towed it to said it was shot and wanted to buy it. Towed it 50 miles home and spent the weekend putting a new chain, sprockets, and cleaning out the oil pan. Still going 100k later. My first and only but followed the manual. Hardest part was hanging onto the balancer to get the bolt out. Just wanted to spin with the stripped sockets. $100 for the tow, and $125 for the chain and sprockets. Back on the road but don’t forget to pack the oil pump.

It was a 1986. Had a 1989 also at the same time and an 86 park ave with th3 3800.

You should have played the lotto then, most of those years jumped timing around 100K, dads 87 Park Ave jumped at 100K, it was so clean inside the engine that the normal carbon build up under the intake manifold (under the tin cover) had zero carbon build up, or anywhere in the engine when I rebuilt it, I pulled it and torn it down cause I figured it had bent valves, but I found out the hard way it didn’t… lol
Sent the block and heads out for hot tank cleaning and had everything decked and checked and the rods and mains and cylinder bore all checked, went back with all std bearings and rings, well file gaped the rings… Engine ran better than ever until my brother drove it and never changed the oil in it, yupers spun a rod bearing at 200K miles, I pulled the dipstick and the oil looked new, pulled the oil filter and turned it upside down and the thick molasses like oil stayed in the filter… Sludged up the whole engine, I was not happy, put a reman in it that time, went 265K before the trans died for the 3rd time, the trans only went 40K the last time, the case was worn out, junked the car…The 440-T4’s had lots of issues back then, the 86 year 440-T4’s were about junk… I could have the engine and trans pulled and on the floor in my home shop in a couple hours… On a rack you’d just drop the sub frame and pull the trans with the engine hanging, but no lift at home, so it was faster to just pull both together… fun times…

All that work you just describe is the reason . . . imo . . . why so many of us blue-collar guys are suffering with numerous debilitating physical conditions at comparatively young ages. Meaning in our 40s and 50s we already have the conditions others would have in their 60s and 70s and beyond

On the 86 did the trans twice. Once the guy was a blank. Year later had it done again by a good shop. Just don’t remember the mileage anymore and had assigned it to the kid to use. On the 89, I had 350k and decided to have the trans done because I was all over the state and didn’t want a winter problem 100 miles from home. The guys said it didn’t really need an overhaul, even at that mileage. Go figure.

Wow, what stories about your upbringing.

From the perspective of someone who has spent time abroad, I can attest that many people where I live still live that way. It’s considered middle-class by local standards.

at 16 years old and assuming it has at or close to 100k I would definitely replace ether DYI or pro which ever you think is best for you. I just replaced a belt on a 2018 Maserati, just keep in mind some vehicles have two belts so it is highly recommended to replace both since it will be easier to replace the serp if you have the second belt you’ll be cutting that belt so you will not be able to reuse. good luck.

Hello and thank you. I bought my Maserati quattroporte new in 2018 currently 69k miles. I’ve done all the maintenance myself since you’re basically paying more for labor and parts simply because you have a Maserati. I’ve done both belts, fluid flush/replacement, rotors and pads.

I had a surgery that required minimal exertion etc. Hired snow guys and fall cleanup guys. Getting lazy I guess. Keeping them on until we can find a condo we like.

I’ve read several articles from reputable sources stating many seniors and people with heart problems drop dead every year shoveling their driveways . . . apparently, it’s very tough on the heart

Yep, just read about a local retired policeman who died while shoveling. Very sad.
