Does a manufacturer really make much off of service?

Nice strawman argument. The discussion was about if you had Aspergers or not. As I stated people with Aspergers are usually at the top of the IQ scale.

The reason I brought my own smarts up is because, and correct me if I misread you, it sound as if you were implying that I wasn’t very smart.

I have a theory about people diagnosed Aspergers, or as autistic in general: That they might be an evolution, albeit misunderstood, to a higher level of the human race. Your thoughts, being as you mentioned high IQ in association with Aspergers?

I didn’t say you weren’t smart, but you clearly are NOT at a genius level.

There is no longer an asperger diagnosis

And there hasn’t been for quite awhile now

According to DSM version 5, autism spectrum disorder encompasses many old(er) diagnoses

However . . . some people have a diagnosis that is NOT included in ASD

And there is no diagnosis that is solely/mostly the domain of geniuses, afaik

If you’ve met one person on the spectrum, you’ve met one person on the spectrum

And that’s it

They’re all different

Autism and Aspergers are both genetic and environmental. Many of the people I’ve met and when to school with who were diagnosed with Aspergers were socially awkward because they were so much smarter than everyone else and had a hard time dealing with inferior people. Their parents didn’t understand them and never tried to. My daughter is at that genius level but doesn’t have Aspergers. She’s well adjusted. Very athletic. Besides getting a full ride to MIT she was also offered full scholarships to other colleges to play Softball and Field Hockey. Not much of a career path in Softball or Field Hockey.

Both sound like me - as a young teen and now. Although let me be clear: Just because I may know more about certain things than someone else, that in no may make me superior, or them inferior.

I fully understand that I am not “better” than anyone just because I understand the term “limit” in the context of speed, to use an example, even though it has been received that way by some.

As I alluded to before, my folks had priorities (for themselves) other than providing socializing opportunities for me from the ages of 5 to 15 (play dates, etc). So while I am self-taught and knowledgeable about certain things (besides Titanic!), it is that social aspect where I have fallen flatter than an LP record on the floor(!)

By the way, congratulations for your daughter. It sounds like the “5-15” period you provided for her was light years more normal than mine!

In my last career, I had the misfortune to work next to a woman with Asperger’s. She had lost her job as a Programmer when Lucent Technologies went belly-up, and while I’m confident that she was very good as a Programmer, she wasn’t suited for a legal career–or any other career where close interaction with others was required.

She constantly made inappropriate comments to other people in the office to such an extent that everyone began to avoid her… whenever possible. When they did have to interact with her, she–somehow–always seemed to imply that she was smarter than they were.

Finally, after she had made the same legal mistakes again and AGAIN in her Court Complaints, the senior Deputy AG called her into her office. Because the walls were so thin, I overheard much of what was said, and the DAG essentially told her… If you spent as much time on improving your legal skills as you do telling everyone else that they are wrong, and that you are smarter than they are, then your position would be secure. HR is going to give you a Professional Improvement Plan, and unless you can modify your behaviors and improve your skills, we’re going to have to let you go.

About 3 months after receiving that improvement plan she had not improved her interpersonal behaviors, and she continued to make the same mistakes. They let her go, and the office environment improved immensely.

Hey, I want to get into this “dog fight….” Too!

First, let me say, there are all types of “Smart…” It is probably best defined as a collection of different cognitive abilities and strengths.

There is being Linguistic, as in being Verbal or “Word Smart.” Where one is proficient in reading, writing, and speaking. They are effective at using words to explain complex ideas or tell stories.

There is being Logical or Mathematical. Where one is excellence in calculating, recognizing patterns, and solving abstract puzzles or logical problems.

Then there is being Visual or Spatial aware or “Picture Smart”. They have the ability to visualize the world in 3D and manipulate mental images. This is common in architects, artists, and navigators.

There is also being ■■■■■■ or Kinesthetic or “Body Smart.” These folk have high physical coordination and dexterity. Examples are athletes, dancers, and surgeons use this intelligence to control their bodies or handle objects with skill.

Not to forget those who are Interpersonally Aware or “People Smart.” They have the ability to understand and interact effectively with others. These individuals are skilled at reading social cues, moods, and motivations.

Secondly, there are all types of “Stupid” too… There are various and distinct types of “stupid” behavior. This often stems from how people process information, manage their ego, or interact with others, rather than just a low IQ.

First and foremost is just plain Ignorance or a simple lack of knowledge or information.

Then there are those with recklessness behavior where they knowingly disregarding safety or facts (for example: ignoring a clear warning sign).

Also, there is those who are completely Distracted where they allow scattered thoughts rather than paying attention or simply the lack of focus which leads to errors.

And there are those who have a specific Dogma where they rigidly cling to a belief even when faced with overwhelming contradictory evidence.

Not to forget those who have an Illusion of Control where they overestimate their ability to control random events (e.g., believing they have a “system” for gambling).

Or in the end, just plain Incompetence where they believe they have a skill they actually lack, leading to poor execution.

I remember a TV Show “The Tycoon” from the '60s where “Walter Brennan” played a wealthy executive at a corporation. In one episode, they were interviewing numerous recent engineering graduates. His HR invited the several from the top of the class, but Walter’s character invited the one who graduates last in the class… The interview included them working on a problem the plant was having issues with the assembly line. The top of the class engineers all came up with brilliant designs to easy the problem, and while those engineers were all designing and drafting their proposals, the last in the class candidate just doodle on the paper. When they all submitted their proposals, the last in class engineer hand in a single sheet of paper… Written on the paper was “Put Right Handed workers on the Right side of the line and Left Handed workers on the Left Side”… That solution solved the problem at no cost and he and the Top in Class candidate were both hire…

My grandfather, who was a department head in the New York State Department of Highways use to say, “When I have a hard job needed to be done I assign it to a lazy man; he is sure to find an easy way of doing it”

When my Granddad said this, he was using a “lazy” person in this context is resourceful because they look for ways to do the job once, rather than repeating tedious tasks, making them great innovators.

He also said, “His laziest workers were his best workers,” so I know it was a compliment.

They say, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results,” I could easily substitute stupid for the work insanity…

I wonder how many “■■■■” this posting will generate?

Since we are diagnosing people, I often rub people the wrong way. Its not always what I say, its the way I say it. ESPECIALLY if I am stating a known matter of fact. This really rubs people the wrong way and has caused me grief in many aspects of my life.

I have questioned if I am on the spectrum. If one is on the spectrum that makes them a protected class, no?

All I wanted is a new original stock knob or trinket. Asked a simple question and people are always taking a tone with me.

I possibly have several disorders according to my wife and a few coworkers and even a friend of mine has rained on my name because they get upset when I state irrefutable matters of fact. I really dont understand it.

Maybe I can qualify for disability, after all that is the true retirement in these current robber barron times, is it not? Or work until 70 thanks to guys liked GEs Jack Welch. Its never enough for these people.

Now watch, someone will argue with me that Jack Welch was good for America.

I must add that I feel we are making some real progress here. We are digging deep, having great debates and figuring things out. Together.

This is all relating to cars in my opinion, it all clicks together if you arrange the pieces correctly.

I am going to make a potentially startling announcement about my thoughts on my old Caprice after the new year, In some ways I have been living in a fools paradise and in some ways I believe I have the right idea.

Rick:

Since late 2001, and especially since 2016, we have been living in a climate where facts, knowledge, are under attack from all quarters.

Purveyors of knowledge are being framed as having a “holier than thou” attitude, or “superiority complex”, not just on CarTalk community, but all over the world.

We are told “It’s not what we are stating but how..”

Well, I’m stating that in most cases, grass is green and the sky is blue.

Facts.

Yet someone will report such statements as a ‘verbal attack’ or whatever.

Perhaps those of us with knowledge to share should just retreat and offer such aid only when solicited for it, and even then, vest and verify the solicitor, lest our reputation be smeared.

I did not catch that the auto correct changed her last name!

Are you going to get a Chevy that has lots of aftermarket replacement parts, like a Tri-Five ?

A lot of words have been removed from the redated list already…

Two things: nobody likes a know-it-all, and things you’ve presented as ‘facts’ here sometimes only have a grain of truth which you expand into a mountain.

Now car related—Deceased NASCAR driver: ■■■■ Trickle, will that name be censored?

AKA, Lies are alternate facts?

I had to google what a Mensa meeting/member was, and even what Mensa meant, if that tells y’all anything…

That’s true, but we can expand this by noting that a lot of people claim that certain things are “facts” when–in fact–they are expressing their opinion regarding a situation, rather than an actual provable fact.

I’ve let people go who can’t/won’t work with everyone else. Believe me - there are faster ways to do it. Most of the time they do it to themselves.
