Studded tires are great for ice - and I would think the places where a studded tire would be useful would be where you get thawing and refreezing, not just cold!

And how often do you encounter black ice? I’ve been living in New England and before that upstate NY and driven well over 1,000,000 miles and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve encountered black ice. And with todays traction control - it really does a great job controlling your vehicle if you encounter it.
There’s a huge difference with studded tires on dry pavement compared to decent all-season tires…HUGE difference. 99% of the time you’re driving on dry pavement in Southern NH and Eastern MA. Wife has had nothing buy all season tires on her FWD vehicles has never had a problem in the past 30+ years.
