Any suggestions on your experience?
I am doing this too and I have found a lot about this and the more I know, the harder the decision seems to be.
Some are only able to record a short while, some record a long time, some will often overwrite what they just recorded, some will stop recording as soon as an accident occurs and not record what happen subsequent, some use WiFi and will notify you if your car is bumped while it is parked, but that means your car needs to have the WiFi…
Some are attached to the windshield permanently with a sticky base, some will attach with a suction cup (these two type of attaching the cam determines if you can move them from one car to another…).
Some have really good night vision; some have lousy night vision and can only make out headlights. Some have voice control to record and save (this is good if you see another accident that did not affect you and you want to offer the recording to the police or someone is acting aggressively towards you or just dangerous). Some have built-in batteries so they continue to function if the vehicles battery is damages…
Some have really low video resolution (720 or 1040) and some have very good resolution (4K), the low resolution ones barely pick up license plate numbers, the high resolution ones can pick up plate umbers up to 100 feet of more…
So many considerations, I am sorry I cannot offer a recommendation, but here are thigs you might want to consider when decideing. Remember, YouTube Videos are your friends…
As if that wasn’t enough (good summary LoudThunder) here’s some things I considered before and after the fact-
If you plan to use this in very cold weather- consider the backup power method used. The super capacitor units can continue to run at very low, sub-zero temps. This was important consideration for me.
Do you want multiple cameras? Interior or more likely rear-view?
Do you want the parking mode option? Nice feature if you park in public or work lots alot or are concerned about break-ins.
You should buy a special memory card for it- one that is meant to survive a lot of write cycles. They are often suggested next to the unit.
I opted for the highest resolution unit so license plates and other details would be readable. Also the best night vision unit for the same reason. What good is a camera that looks like one of those convenience store videos where you can’t even make out any details?
Consider hardwiring it into the car. I still have a power plug that I keep forgetting to plug in. What’s worse then not having a camera? Having one that is powered off when you need it most…
All made in China. All are great.
We have 2 cars. She buys anything she wants or needs. We are getting rid of stuff to move to a townhouse eventually. Need to have something under the tree for her. I thought a dashcam would be something fun to use, and potentially important. She was happy with the Oreck I bought her for her birthday one year!
Keep buying “Utility Presents” like that Oreck and you might need a two bedroom townhouse… L L . . .
We are old enough practical and scottish thrifty.
Suggested it, she was no, so spent big bucks for Shen Yun tickets, not even asking
No argument there, saw them a few years ago, it’s Magical (with a Capital “M”…), our seats were not the high end tickets, but we bought front row, just off center, balcony and we did not have to worry about some idiot holding up a iPhone recording the show (and fewer kids…)…
Today, those ticket range from a low of $133 (in the high wings-balcony), to $450 (Center Balcony), $140 9just off center Balcony), to $172 Middle of the Floor, to $250 (up front right under the stage–“smell their feet…”) These prices are for the show they will have in Norfolk next month at Chrysler Hall.
When you are on the floor, depending on the rise in the floor towards the rear, folks standing, taking photos, hats, hair-dos, etc… can restrict your view… And the sound under the balcony can get weird…
The tickets go fast, don’t delay… Happy Holidays!
As as side issue, the wife called me in to see a HSN presentation for a Tablo Home System DVR…
She hates the setup we have today, No cable, but an 18’ antenna in the attic, can pick up about 70 over the air channel, and a Roku for the Internet which give us hundreds of more channels, but I also have Two (count them, two) old VCRs that are connected to two digital to analog TV converter boxes to record local TV stations (that gives us 4 more remote controls to deal with…).
This will replace the two VCRs and the converter boxes… Our three local charity thrift shops gave away all their old VCR players and tapes and will not even accept a donation…
She placed the order herself and she hates technology… And she asked me where I was in the search for the Dash Cams… It’s going to be a weird Christmas…
Bought the tickets, Milwaukee must be cheaper. $155 ea 1 row behind the top $185 each. Had a nice antenna on the roof, electric motor etc. Got reroofed, wife did not want the antenna on the roof. In the attic it sits, but not rewired.
Congrats on the tickets, brings lots of small change (for tips…), when they have intermission, you may want to indulge, small cakes, wines, liquors, beers, etc… (kind of High Brow. But don’t let that get you, they are all frauds…). They usually overdress and talk “smack…”
Also, if you or the wife take photos, do not use Flash, you are too far away for it to do any good and you will only piss off the folks near you…
For a while just before going into the Air Force in '71, I worked as a TV Antenna Installer. In our area, upstate NY, having a large antenna and depending on your location, an outside antenna rotator was almost a necessity, even though we only had three VHF channels (ABC, CBS, and NBC), and one UHF (PBS). This antenna (my 18-footer) I bought about 40-years ago, It was a special order from Radio Shack and I usually install it in the attic to protect it from the elements and simplify running the wire… I had a rotator for a while, but the big beam was too much to rotate in the confines of an attic so I passed it on, especially now that I do not live in the boonies…
You need to get that antenna wired up, you do not want to miss Ryan Seacrest’s New Year’s Eve’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” L o L . . .
