Are you supposed to put grease on the splines that fit into the transmission (I have a manual), or just the splines that go into the hub?
Nope!
Once you insert the axle and drive the vehicle, the splines are lubricated from inside the transmission.
That’s why there’s axle seals.

2005 Hyundai accent. Manual transmission. Multi-purpose GC-LB grease.
A smear of grease on the inner axle splines to a manual transmission can’t possibly harm it.
