I’m not sure a dealer is going to flat out say it is covered or not or that all the parts are in stock until they actually inspect the car. Then they can determine if it was abuse, faulty part, and so on and work up an estimate/no charge.
Better be the parking brake because the first time you hit the brake pedal, stuff will come unglued.
The point in my comment was to simply try to prepare in advance if the news was not positive; as in covered or not and parts availability.
Lack of coverage after the fact could lead to the OP having his car towed and likely facing a much higher repair bill if it came down to not covered/fix it on your dime or tow it out of here option.
The OP could check the Honda statement site as the VIN will clarify it one way or the other. Then a call to the dealer parts dept. to verify the part situation.
The VIN method is definitive and just because a certain year/model is under Recall does not mean they all are.
Cut and paste from Honda…specific needs to be defined.
Models included in these recalls: (certain specific vehicles only)
Paying for a tow truck to get a vehicle 1.3 miles wouldn’t be something I’d want to do either, to be honest.
Vehicles with recalls that are in the dealers service department are first in line for replacement parts so don’t delay towing the car in for the recall.
Honda’s recall look up page, enter your VIN;
One night a connection came loose on my transmission line and still had six blocks to go home. I enlisted the wife to pull me home. We made it ok but all I can say is might want to select someone with a little more mechanical aptitude for a tow vehicle. Before cell phones and my walki talki.
I’d pay the money for the tow. Mess up and the damage multiplies.
Doesn’t your car insurance include free towing?
I doubt it. I have the lowest level of insurance required by law on two of my vehicles since they’re 16 years old and approaching 200k miles. If someone hits me, it’s cheaper to buy a replacement vehicle than to pay for comprehensive insurance each month indefinitely. That’s my thoughts on it anyway. Once a vehicle is worth less than $10k or so, I don’t carry comprehensive insurance on it anymore.
I have towing on my policies and it is at extra cost-something like $4 extra every 6 months. I also have the motor club. I have used both in the past depending on the circumstances. Insurance is a reimbursement.
I could be wrong but I think the towing is just for accidents. and to the nearest dealer. anything further you would pay the difference.
It probably differs from one insurance company to another. My insurance coverage for towing is for any legitimate reason, not just as the result of an accident.
If you only have liability you still need more coverage than the state requires . On liability insurance the value of your vehicle is not a factor . the damage you do to another party if for some reason the accident if ruled your fault.
I’m not very familiar with the terminology. I’m covered (to a certain limit) for damage to the other vehicle or it’s occupants. Damage to my vehicle isn’t covered, whether my fault or the other driver’s (if they’re uninsured). I assumed that was the lowest coverage you could legally carry.
You need to talk to your agent . The state minimum for most states is not near enough if someone has a serious injury .
Probably so. I don’t recall what the max limit is on mine is. I don’t know what the min legal limit is either. By “I carry the min legal required”, I meant I carry liability insurance only. That is generally what is required by law, correct?
I’ll have to chime in again. When I started selling insurance, I was required to raise my limits on my car. The thing is most people really need an umbrella policy too. They are only a couple hundred a year but add several million of additional coverage. In order to get one though you need the high vehicle limits, plus home and cars need to all be with the same company. It is not hard these days to inadvertently do something stupid and be on the hook for big losses. Sure some will argue that people tend to settle for what the limits are or they have no current assets, but not always and that can include future income and assets.
+1
I don’t think that I had ever heard of an umbrella policy… until one of the faculty members was in a very bad situation because of a personal injury lawsuit that resulted from an accident that was his daughter’s fault. I saw that man age about 10 years in the space of whatever time it took for the suit to be settled.
The general buzz in the faculty room was “Get an umbrella policy so that you won’t be in the same situation that Richard is in”. I added umbrella coverage to my policy after seeing what he went through, and–25 years later–I renew it every year
Like Scrapyard Dog I also live in Mississippi and haven’t carried anything but liability insurance on personal vehicles that I drive which have largely been older models and in the past 25 years I have been lucky enough to have had no accidents and feel sure that my savings compared to full collision, comprehensive, uninsured motorist, etc., would total enough to pay for a new car. My current liability policy on 2 old trucks is less than $400 and it does have a higher level for personal injury than the state requires but I recall the property damage limit (legal minimum) wouldn’t replace a new Lexus or even a Mustang for that matter, but what are the odds of needing to?
If you ask me, I’m a firm believer in random clusters being random. But if you ask a mathematician like the professor, they’ll say ever flip of the coin has the same odds as the one before it. So you can be accident free for 25 years and then bango, some kid rides his bike out from the front of a parked car. Like Clint said “do you feel lucky today?”
Not to change the subject again but I was watching the mid air crash of a couple planes over Europe due to a controller error. 60 Russian kids were killed in the crash. The Russian father was so upset at the loss of his wife and child, he tracked down the Swiss controller, who was equally upset, and shot him dead. Sometimes money just doesn’t even the score.
