Cruise Control

I have a 1995 Park Avenue. When the cruise is on, the car zooms forward to maintain the set speed. It happens every few seconds and lasts only a few seconds. The tachometer goes from 1K to ~3-4K then back down just that quickly. I’m sure this isn’t good for the gas mileage. I replaced all the vacuum hoses but that didn’t help. Any suggestions?

Sometimes cruise control can downshift for you when it needs extra power. If you are going uphill when this happens, it is probably normal. Another alternative is that the cruise control is losing power intermittently, and regaining power leads it to try to resume the set speed.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that this happens on level ground.

Also, if it matters, the car has 120,000 miles on it.
