Crank But No Start Situation

Greetings!
2005 Grand Prix GT, 3.8 liter.
Recently car would randomly die while driving, but then fire right back up and keep driving.
Now it won’t start at all, and when you let off on the key, the starter keeps running for about two seconds. I thought it was a faulty ignition switch so I replaced it, but still has same symptoms. Anybody familiar with this situation? Thanks in advance!

That’s one of the symptoms of a failing crank sensor.

And now, it may have totally failed.

Just tried some starting fluid and it wanted to fire, so now I’m thinking maybe fuel pump.
The fuel pump has always been loud in this car, and you can still hear it prime when you turn on the key, however it may be too weak to move gasoline. Or maybe the filter needs to be changed. I think my next step is to test the pressure. But a bad fuel pump doesn’t explain my starter continuing to crank after I let off on the key. Maybe I have more than one problem?

That is a GM thing, (other OEM’s may be doing it by now) it is by design… All you have to do is hit the key one time and it will continue to crank for X amount of seconds or until it starts 1st…

That seems like a good plan. Consider to discount the continues to crank briefly issue until fuel system issue is addressed. If you have a fuel pressure problem preventing the engine from starting, that may be allowing you to hear slightly extended cranking that you can’t hear when engine pops and starts immediately.

If an unexplained extended cranking problem remains after engine no start is fixed, don’t ignore, must be addressed b/c unexplained extended cranking can cause the starter motor to overheat & lead to an engine fire.
