Count-down WALK signals save gas! Pedestrians now given WALK before traffic GREEN signal

Seeing that we will not make the green signal, we start coasting, saving gas, pollution and brake wear.

Pedestrians now receive [WALK] 4? seconds before traffic in the same direction gets a GREEN signal!
Pedestrians already out in the crosswalk will be more visible to turning drivers.

In Florida, and many other places, the Yellow is the signal to STEP ON THE GAS!

Only if the driver is not texting and paying attention

Yes, let’s use a relatively delicate living being to signal to drivers of heavy metal conveyances that they should slow or stop. If anything, the walk signal should be delayed by 4-5 seconds to allow the intersection to clear before stepping into harms way.

I have always been one to say he who has the biggest vehicle has the right away rather they are in the wrong or not… An 18 wheeler can destroy your car and you with out hardly knowing you were there… Something with people crossing the streets, a vehicle always wins in a battle, LOOK before you cross!!! But drivers need to pay more attention while driving also, but walkers need to always be on the lookout for the texter or person talking on the phone or the parent making there kids get back in there seats or stop fighting… Lot of distractions out there…

Around here the aggressive right turn on red folks would NOT be happy with this.

Most of the intersection-stop-lights in my area can be triggered either using the pedestrian pushbutton, or by the in-road sensor. The in-road sensor has a much shorter cycle time, appx 8 seconds compared to 45 seconds. When riding my bicycle I prefer to use the in-road sensor b/c there’s less waiting time for the motorists. There’s quite a few intersections that don’t trigger w/a bicycle, even though there’s an indicator for the bicycle sensor painted on the road, so for those I’m forced to use the pedestrian button, and the motorists have to wait longer than necessary. When I point this problem out to the folks responsible for making sure the in-road bicycle sensors work, they don’t seem to show much interest.

Here in NH and MA…After the light turns red - there will be 2-3 vehicles going through the red light. I see if EVERY SINGLE DAY no matter what part of NH or MA I’m in. Yellow means speed up. I lost count of the number of times I’ve seen someone getting rearended because they slowed down when light turned yellow and then stopped when it turned red.

A couple of years ago, I came very close to being T-boned by someone who went past a red light. Now, when the light turns green, I make sure that I have a clear view of the lanes of cross-traffic before proceeding.

Here, too. When I was in Ohio, there was one specific light I saw red light runners every day.

I was on an extended business trip a couple of years ago. While in this small town I walked just about everywhere. Several times I had the walk light illuminated but had to dodge someone that wanted to turn right on red. Mostly I got the oops wave from the driver because they weren’t watching pedestrian traffic. I was lucky I hadn’t stepped of the curb yet.

In our city the don’t walk signal flashes 11 times before it turns yellow, except major thoroughfares, ie intersection of 4 lane highways. Itallows me to know if I am going to need to stop or not. Yes as soon as they start flashing I count them. Dubious about saving gas.

Pedestrian or bicyclist, had I presumed the other drivers at or approaching the intersection would always yield when I had the legal right of way, I’d had been dead long ago. If there’s a potential conflict for space, I always wave the other drivers through. Most of my near collisions are with other bicyclists.

As far as the count down display, I find it helpful, but not a necessity. I don’t see it saving much in the way of gasoline usage.
