Common matainance gaps that casue early failure of your car

If you go back and read my posts I did not call you names and the cut and paste below is my comment about making personal info public on the net. To wit:

While I don’t think for one minute that you or your students would do anything out of line there may be an issue with becoming public on the net or doling out names on an email. This can get around and possibly cause problems.

This rolls around to my point again. You want US to put personal info out there but are apparently not willing to put any info about yourself, fellow students, or your instructor.
The knife cuts both ways.

There are a number of competent people on this board (both mechanics and DIYers) with vast mechanical knowledge who are willing to share insights and this is proven every single day.
There is simply no good or justifiable reason why the name of the person should even be relevant to a discussion here or in your classroom. It simply doesn’t matter.

There’s a site (state agency in OK) here that I dink around from time to time and believe me, I’ve dug up dirt (traffic tickets to lawsuits to major felonies) very easily on some people who would prefer the dirt not be dug and aired out.
I keep it to myself but if I wanted to… :-

I stated “a few members” A couple members were very civil.

I said I would be willing to exchange information if you would have bothered to e-mail or work with me.

It is not my business to tell the teacher what is her business or not. I simply need to have it to get my grade.

“if you would have bothered to e-mail or work with me”…

…and how exactly are we supposed to do that? You’ve given up zip (as of when I checked your profile earlier today), and I prefer it that way.

We’ve endeavored to work with you, you haven’t been happy with what we’ve supplied, and now we’re just telling you no. Accept what you get, and either live with it, or research some other way. Pester us no more.

Thanks,
Chase.

I did give you an e-mail adress right in my origonal posting.

I guess it does not matter now.

I have researched other ways, but I am attemtpting to clear my name here. I am up to nothing shady here.

Soil my name no more good sir.

Good day.

I’ll give you an example of why knowing nothing more than a name can lead to something much bigger. While I will not provide the details, let’s just say it involved a civil issue with a lady over a large sum of money. I had no info on her other than her name.

So one morning with phone book in hand I start calling banks and laying out a Godzilla sized line of utter BS.
The first 3 banks I struck out on but hit a homer on No. 4.
Within 60 seconds I had the approximate amount of money in her bank accounts, her home address, and her phone number, which was an unlisted one.

I’m not a talkative, salesman type person but if I could get this kind of information so easily from a bank then you can see how a real scam artist could use a name to create all kinds of havoc.

(Again, I reiterate that it’s not you I’m worried about. It’s the name winding up in the hands of ? that would be my concern.)

Follow the manufacturers recommended service intervals.

Don’t touch or fix the car yourself.

Don’t let someone convince you they are a mechanic and can fix your car.

Ask for credentials and don’t let anyone with less than 10 years mechanical experience work on your vehicle.

80% of my work is the result of vehicle modifications and/or work done by mechanic “wanabees”.

I have 37 years experience. Parts Manager,Warranty Manager, Service Manager, Service Director.A.S.E. Master Certified Tech , Vehicle Safety Inspector .

Oldwrench, I happen to value my ASE’s but some (like the guy posting above you) sees them as an indication of incompetance. Something like you can’t have the cert and be competant at the same time, we have been through this many times.

You’re full of crap. I have never said that ASE certification is a sign of incompetence.
What I have said is that having ASE certification does not guarantee competence nor does it guarantee a customer an honest and/or competent repair.
That is proven countless times day in and day out.

I have also said that passing an ASE exam only means that the person taking the test got X number of multiple choice answers correct either with knowledge, sheer luck and guesswork, or a combination of both.

I agree 0k4450, but the same could be said for someone who has passed the Bar exam or FAA pilots exam, which I did pass.

There are terrible lawyers and pilots out there also.

I also passed Fire Truck Pump Operator exam. It has an 80% failure rate, but the true test is at a Fire scene.Panic or pulling the wrong lever can kill fellow firefighters

I think the O/P needs to get thee to a library and get a book about MLA or APA formatting. It will explain, in detail, how to site sources including relatively annonymous web based sources.

It has always amazed me how owners can be so concerned with changing their oil while neglecting the body. The potential life expectancy for a car body is indefinite if given the right attention. Even if you don’t plan on keeping your car beyond 10 years, a rust free and clean body is worth infinitely more than one that fails inspection. I was never a believer till I watched a fellow teacher commute 30 miles daily one way in the rust belt for years with an immaculate 25year old Beetle.

Check the post running today where it is claimed 5 miles was traveled with a knocking engine before someone could ‘find a safe place to pull over’. This is exactly what I am talking about. How is it I know this kind of stuff, first day on the job perhaps?

whatever, dude. I can point out several stretches of Interstate here with no breakdown lane or shoulder. You want to put your life in the hands of a tractor trailer driver while you stop in a travel lane, be my guest.

lol dude, you keep driving, I have more than one tool in my bag.

I’ve read master’s theses in computer science that referenced useful information from anonymous online sources. As long as you include a print-out of the thread in one of your appendices, and you cite the source (website, etc.), I think it will be safe for your associate’s degree level paper.
