Clinking under the hood

I have a 2005 Ford Escape. I recently have heard a clinking noise coming from under the hood of the passenger side. It is located near the belt, but sounds as if it is in the engine itself. The noise does not stay in one place either. Same location, just moves around. It honestly sounds like a penny is clinking around inside the engine. Any ideas on what this is?

Try using a metal rod (like a long extension for a socket), place it against your ear, and touch it to variousplaces on the engine. Keep far away from anything moving (like the belt). This is sort of a cheap mechanics stethoscope.

From your description, it sounds like the fuel injectors firing. If it is, it’s normal.
