California residents can renew online if an emission test certificate is on file.

Well I guess George didn’t have one on file, but don’t you need to do this every year?

SMOG test every two years in California.

George needs a emissions test, he doesn’t want them in his car to do the test.

It’s 2022 now, almost 23, so two years has been up for quite a while. A simple extension of the certificate with at mail in fee would have seemed reasonable as people were restricted either by fiat or personal fear.

His most recent emission test would have been for the 2018 registration renewal, certificate is good for 90 days, a new test was required for the 2020 renewal.

Actually the issue isn’t going to the DMV, but going to the emissions testing shop and a test tech with unknown virus status getting in & driving the car for 15-20 minutes on their treadmill, then I have to get in and drive it back home, breathing the same possibly virus laden air. Not gonna happen. The DMV is well aware of the virus transmission risk sharing airspace in cars, stopped all their in-car driver tests to keep their employees safe, and showed some other common sense, made accommodations for high Covid risk folks; e.g. they waived the requirement for taking an eye test for older drivers to get their DL renewed. Just needed to mail a form to renew DL. Corolla problem isn’t the DMV so much as it is Calif elected politicians.

Yes, Corolla has PNO status. One bit of confusion, I thought I had to renew the PNO fee every year, but they just mailed the check back. Apparently no need to renew, once a car has PNO in Calif is always has PNO until PNO status is asked to be changed by the owner. As far as how much it is gonna cost to re-register the Corolla once I’m comfortable with the test-safety issue, no idea. If it costs too much I’ll just continue driving the truck.

A $5 can of Lysol could of solved all your problems.

The DMV apparently has the authority to modify their rules for “extenuating circumstance”, but doesn’t have the ability to over-rule elected politicians. These are the folks who insist every vehicle pass an emission test regardless of Covid risk to the car owner. It seems like some common-sense accomodations for protecting high Covid risk owners could be easily made at the testing shop; for example verifying the car’s CEL must turn on, then back off once engine starts. That could be done without entering vehicle, or ask the owner to do it while tech watches from outside. And the test tech could inspect whatever they wanted under the car , in the engine compartment, test the gas cap, make sure all the required parts are there, perform their evap system test, etc. They could do idle tail-pipe emissions test too, just not while driving. Sort of have to wonder why they even require treadmill testing at all? I presume the reason is that clever car owners and shops can rig a car to pas tailpipe tests at idle but it then wouldn’t pass at 35 mph.

Also, very few cars and owners even affected, only applies to OBD I cars owned by high covid risk owners. A very simple solution was available, just temporarily wave emissions testing for those cars.

Maybe, but wonder then why DMV didn’t do that in order to resume in-car driving tests?

Just a thought
If you really want to get it done. Home Depot sells N-95 masks in the tool dept., or you can get them online and have it delivered. put on the mask when you get there and latex gloves. wear them until you get home. then spray the inside of the vehicle with Lysol and let it sit for a day or so.

After the first six months I pretty much concluded it was a very low risk and there still is not sufficient data to suggest the main means of transmission. At any rate don’t count on Lysol to take care of it. Lysol droplets are heavy and the virus droplets are near microscopic. Still I support anyone doing what they personally think they need to do.

In Minnesota when the associated costs of inspection and the benefits looked at, it was determined the ones most benefitting were the inspection shops. Need to look at the the actual degree of failures and the harm done, plus as replacement vehicles came on line, it just made little sense.

Sending in a sworn statement subject to penalty of law, that your washers work, ac works, lights work, and no engine light would seem to insure similar results a lot more effectively. Every April we don’t need to go to an irs inspection station to file our taxes. A signature does it.

I disagree. Transmission of COVID-19 is airborne. That may not have been certain when you tuned out after 6 months but it is established now. COVID-19 is also a significantly lower risk because vaccines for uninfected people can prevent or lessen the effects. There are also drugs to lessen the effect for people with COVID-19.

On the advice of my Oncologist, I went over and above my fully-vaccinated status, and a few weeks ago I received an infusion of Evusheld monoclonal antibodies in order to further bolster my immune system. This medication has not been well-publicized, but if any of you have a compromised immune system, I suggest that you ask your M.D. if Evusheld would be appropriate for you.

What’s your source on that? The scientists that actually study this are very convinced that it’s airborne. The water droplets that we breath can stay in the air a long time and other people can then breath in that air.

Go in, ask for a manager, be nice, say, “isn’t this a little excessive”. If they’re a jerk about it, go over to the snack island and consume 50 cookies and a gallon of coffee; call it even:)

Second thought, forget about the manager, just go eat the cookies until you’re satisfied.

I dropped off my 84 year old mothers car for service. Thinking the owner was 84 and female, they ran up the bill; charged $70 for a “cabin filter”, etc.

When I showed up for the car, I’m like “WHOA!” They thought an old woman was going to show up
nope. I asked to see the old cabin filter. “They threw it away” they said. Yeah, ok. short story, free cabin filter change and charged only for what was scheduled.

$5 for a gallon? Where are you? I routinely see that stuff for 99 cents a gallon.

I was in Skokie IL years back, a gallon of milk at a convenience store was $10, today it’s probably $50:(

It’s transmitted like all viruses: Air, surfaces, physical contact.

Chew on this, I caught it, very sick, coughing like a chain smoker for days on end. My wife/daughters where within feet of me, took turns sleeping in the same room to keep an eye on me.

Wife and daughters did not become the least bit sick, didn’t even “test positive” despite being right there in my face for a solid week (no one was “vaccinated”)

UV is supposed to be one of the most effective killers of the virus. Maybe have the car parked outside for a few hours and maybe have someone turn it around so parts in shadow are more exposed to sun.

Maybe drive with the windows down and the heat on full blast for a few days as well.

Generic drinking water is over $1 a gallon at Walmart, I wonder what, if anything, is in that $.99 washer fluid. Generic fluid is $3 at Walmart, name brand $4-$5.

The “summer formula” is cheaper. This actually works better if you ask me and is supposed to be better for the environment. I only buy it in like May so there will be little mixed in when I need to go back to winter formula. Summer formula offers no freeze protection but does cost considerably less but it does seem to clean very well.

I don’t even know if you can find this now with all the dumb shortages we have to contend with daily at present.
