I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla. When I go to start the car I have to have the clutch in when I turn the key.
Sometimes when I turn the key, I hear a “click”, but nothing happens. Sometimes I only have to turn 3 or 4 times and then the car starts. Sometimes, I have to turn the key 30 or 40 times! And sometimes it just starts right up.
I have clean the battery posts, so no corrosion in the way. I have checked the battery charge and it is fine.
It is more of a hassle than anything, but sometimes my wife uses my car and I would hate to have her stuck somewhere because my car won’t start.
This has been going on for about 3 months and is not getting better or worse.
the clutch thing sounds normal, most modern cars have that as a safety feature, sounds like your battery has had it
How did you check the battery?
I suggest having it checked under load. Many auto parts stores will do it for free.
If the battery is OK under load, then it most likely is the relay in the starter.
