“Forty years ago, I worked with a doofus who insisted if you paid for gas with a 100 dollar bill and the gas station couldn’t give you the correct change, the gas was free. I am not sure OP was trying to beat them. I subscribe to the old saying: Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity.”
For some reason that brings to mind the hippie chick in Louis Malle’s movie Atlantic City, who says, “I don’t believe in gravity”.
I suppose that people can really be that…ignorant…but it is hard for me to believe that they really do exist.
Never underestimate ignorance; or in some cases, sheer stupidity.
Many years ago our city council (after much debate, paperwork, meetings, etc) borrowed money from a bank to create a reserve fund which was kept in the same bank.
This reserve fund was drawing about 1.5% interest. The city was paying 8.5%.
Down to the last college degreed man and woman, every one of them honestly thought the town was “making money” while that fund was sitting there.
ok4450 Unfortunately this is not uncommon with those who are spending other peoples money. The 8.5% versus 1.5% is not coming out of their bank account. That is our current politicians. We really need to kick them all onto the street and start over our hold them accountable for their huge financial mistakes I’m pretty sure they would choose the street. My other problem is with gambling which is now quite legal and actually encouraged by the state as a tax on people who tend to be on public assistance or drug dealers who are very bad at math.
Politicians have even more creative math. If one politician wants to raise a tax 8% and the other gets the tax raised 5% instead, the second brags that he reduced taxes by 3%.
I remember an old “Andy Capp” cartoon strip. He comes home and discovers his wife Flo is wearing a new coat. He asks “how much did that cost”? Flo replies: “Actually nothing, it was half off so I bought it with the money I saved”! Politician economics 101. Heaven help us!
Hello, there - looks like things are going off-topic. Could you please bring it back, if there’s anything else to be added to the presenting problem? Thank you.
