Bought a 93 Ford Taurus started having issues out of it

Well the seller said nothing was wrong with it…HA! It’s a 93 ford taurus…started leaking antifreeze 2 days after I bought it. Took down the road to a mechanic he said it has a cracked head gasket, said would cost $900 alone to fix that, not including if he found other things may be causing problems also. Didn’t have those kinds of funds available and I had read online about Blue Devil…a permanent fix for cracks and leaks…better be cost $60. So we flushed out the radiator, did everything like it said…then the thermometer on the car needs replacing, it’s leaking so going to buy a new one this morning. There was no milky color in the oil and no white smoke coming out the tail pipe. It seems to drive fine, a little loud because of the muffler is a little shaky. I would like to know advice on the car, the mechanic said could find alike motor and replace it…so that is an option. What do you guys think is my best bet? I only have $1200 in this car…didn’t want to spend huge money on repairs…being the seller straight up lied to us.

If you don’t have the funds…then you might as well try it. Although I seriously doubt it’ll work.

If you have already installed the Blue Devil, are not getting coolant in the oil and no white smoke out the tail pipe, I would drive on. Replace the thermostat and the gasket for the housing if it is leaking.
I faced a similar problem years ago with a 1947 Pontiac that I purchased for $75 in 1961. Coolant was getting in the oil. I removed the cylinder head and found that the engine block was cracked. I bought a can of K & W seal, put the cylinder head back on the engine and followed the directions on the can. I ran the car for another problem for another year until I could afford something better. Two years later, that Pontiac was still on the street.

You have a 20 year old car. I wouldn’t pour any serious money into it, but the Blue Devil might work for you as the K & W seal did for me.

ah, so you are honest. seller was less than honest. you can try sealer and if it works, drive car or sell it but tell next buyer it has issues. you may be able to get most of your money back. we are talking 1000 car afterall. not a 30k mercedes. maybe someone looking for a 1k car would go for it. i think any other 1k car you buy is probably going to be in the same condition. just another person trying to sell a shaky car.

yea…I agree…

So he replaced the seal which was leaking, and used the blue devil…it’s no longer overheating and seems to be running fine now…I heard blue devil works great for cracks/leaks…so hope it stay running smoothly for a while.

Advice for the next car purchase . . .

Take a mechanic with you

Not every seller is ethical

Maybe the head gasket failure diagnosis is not correct. The car is aged and you state it started leaking 2 days after buying the car so I’m not faulting the seller at this point.
Cracked is a poor descriptive term for a head gasket fault anyway.

Sometimes the water pump bypass hose (out of sight and out of mind) has been known to seep and a head gasket gets the blame.

You did say “thermometer” was bad? Not sure what that is. Let’s see, coolant temp gauge, thermostat, or ? Maybe it had “thermo” in name? Since coolant was leaking it could be any part that prevents leakage.
