It was sold as a Bavaria only in the US at the request of an importer, ‘Bavarian Motor Works Bavarian’ being an odd name. The importer did some picking and choosing of confugurations and the resulting model wasn’t quite sold in Europe. We got the long wheelbase and slightly larger engine, but with a plain interior typical of base models. It was intended to compete with large MB models, but with a sportier flair. Not uncommon in the LA of my youth, but it was a neighborhood of Air Force officers who brought back cars from Europe. It wasn’t until years later that I realized over half the cars on the street were imports. Porsche, VW, Volvo, Saab, MG, Jag, Pantera, even. Even we had a Beetle. My dad spent two years in the Army in Germany in the mid-fifties, so it made him smile.
