good idea, I’ll keep that in mind.
Just curious, how do you use solder for shimming purposes @circuitsmith . Do you just wrap some solder around the post then tighten the clamp? That seems like it would work pretty well.
Just put it straight up and down, no wrapping. Takes about an inch.
Fish it through the hole of the clamp before pushing it down on the post.
Fed right from the roll. Break off after tightening the clamp.
If one piece doesn’t take up the slack use two or more, although that could get awkward.
The solder I used was 18 gauge but thinner (for fine electronic work) or thicker (plumbing) is available.
Sorry I don’t have a photo. The car I did this on I sold 9 years ago.
I replace about 50 batteries each year and never needed a shim for a terminal clamp. On rare occasion a clamp may be stretched or damaged, it gets replaced.
I often find loose battery terminals on batteries purchased from discount parts stores, many people don’t push the clamp down all the way on the battery post so the clamp won’t tighten properly. The battery posts are tapered, if the clamp it too high on the post it will may not tighten.
