Ask Someone: 2006 Hyundai Elantra #1736364160

Good day
The fuel gage and light dont work on the car i have tried swopping the wires aslo but still nothing i have been stuck along the road a few times without fuel i bought the car from some one else what can be the problem thanks

Diy’er here, no Elantra experience. Could be the fuel pump unit inside the gas tank, contains the variable resistance float-mechanism which the dashboard fuel display uses. Or it might be the dashboard display. Or it might be an electrical problem, disconnected wires, alternator, battery, etc.

My first diy’er step if I had that problem would be to test the basic battery & alternator function. If that test passed ( I expect it will for your car) I’d use manufacturer r&m data to determine if it was possible to access the output from the fuel tank unit, temporarily replace it with an external variable resistor, to discover if the dashboard display moves as the resistance is varied. Note this method may not work or may not be advisable on every car design, could possibly damage something, so if unsure, verify w/your shop. I expect you already know that the best and safest method is to hire an experienced pro mechanic to do the job for you.

What wires did you try swapping??

You can use your trip meter, fill up the car, reset the trip meter to 0 and don’t drive over x amount of miles, check online or elsewhere for your gas tank size, how many gallons it holds, then figure out what your MPG is, example, if you have a 10 gallon tank and you get 25 mpg, then you should be able to max 250 miles from full to you run out, so fill up every 200 miles, add your numbers to figure it out for your vehicle, that way gas gauge or not, you will never run out of gas again unless the mpg start dropping for lack of proper maintenance…

But chances are the fuel level sensor in the gas tank (fuel pump assembly) has failed or something with the wiring, unless there is a TSB or something on it…

When you 1st start the car, does all the gauge needles do a sweep including the fuel gauge??
