An end to scam extended warranty phone calls?

I like cash but have you ever tried to stuff a significant amount in your billfold? Even with $100 bills, it fills up fast.

Mr security paranoid here, I have a checking account for paypal etc with $1200 or so balance.

I don’t use PayPal and I only do bank inquiries, ordering, etc on the computer connected by wire. Never on the iPad over the air.

A few years ago my old college room mate stopped by. He had his lap top and we didn’t have Wi-Fi at the time. He said let’s see if we can pick up a signal, and in a couple minutes had his choice of about four connections in the neighborhood. His career was in communications and pretty sure he could have found stuff on their servers.

Hard lines are harder but the wife is not convinced yet.

Here’s a new one that I haven’t seen before. Its from Coin Base Support saying that for security they are holding my withdrawal of BTC for 72 hours etc. etc. So I’m supposed to get excited and tell them no no no and here is my information.

I assume a BTC is bitcoin but I don’t have any and wouldn’t even know how to get them or sell them let alone know who the heck is holding them. So I just deleted it.

I ordered a couple things last night so maybe that’s what generated it.

Another golden opportunity missed. Should have been more trusting.

Do any of you folks have this problem? Currently very few telemarketer messages are left on my answering machine, but I can tell from the display at least one person (presumably a tele-marketer) has called and hung up before leaving a message. For some reason this causes the answering machine to change from “silent-answer” mode to “normal” mode; so if another marketer calls before I can push a button to revert the machine to “silent mode”, I have to listen to what the telemarketers are saying. Anyone else have this frustrating experience? Can’t figure out why the answering machine would be designed to change mode like that. Seems like if the owner puts it in silent mode, it should stay in silent mode indefinitely.

I have the playback volume set to 0, so I never hear them leaving a message. Once a day I play back with the volume up, then back to 0.

The problem w/my answering machine, I set volume to zero, but if somebody calls and doesn’t leave message, the volume goes to 5 automatically. Hard to figure why. Read the instructions, doesn’t seem to be any way to prevent it.

Same here, answering machines are not always friendly. My landline is unplugged so the answering machine is no longer of concern. Part of my cable/WiFi bundle. I will plug it in to find my cell phone.
Cellphone, if number is not in my contact list, I swipe left, let it go to voicemail. Driving is another story, caller is not listed on my vehicle’s screen, so I have answered calls, only then to hear a spammer.

I got hit with scams via PayPal TWICE! Both times they were of NO HELP and sided with a scammer even when I was able to prove beyond a doubt it was a scam. I thought it was a fluke the first time. When it happened again, I closed my account. It was a tracking number scam during the heat of the pandemic on a hard to find part. I got a many page manifest from FEDEX and it was obvious this was not a tracking number for what I ordered. PP didn’t care.

Some of the scam calls where they just hang up are randomly dialing to see if it is a legit number or not. This lists can be sold to whoever, whether it be scammers about your car warranty or the fake IRS calls.

There was some trick where they were able to leave voicemails without your phone ringing as well but I think most providers have fixed that problem and closed the loophole now.

Was your paypal linked to a checking account? I have never tried to dispute a charge from a checking account. The bank could not do anything for you?

It had been backed up by a credit card the first time so I got my money back that way. The 2nd time was a little more complicated and left me with such a sour taste that I never want to use ANY PayPal/Venmo service again. They eventually ruled in my favor after a long fight and I got my money back. BUT they took like $25 for the hassle of having to deal with the claim… I was done with them at that point.
