Advanced driver assistance systems

Which has nothing to do with the advanced driver assistance. I have seen drivers use the old basic cruise control and read a newspaper ( do they still have newspapers ? ). As for musk, he needs a keeper and he is a terrible excuse for a human.

I think the point is not that advanced assistance is the cause of careless phone use while driving, but that it enables it. Or provides the illusion that it’s safe to do in these vehicles.

Also, the initial article was about GM saying how they test their vehicles’ capabilities; well, Musk is another auto-maker who recently admitted to lying about that type of thing. So, I have some doubts & concerns.

I agree. My EV has games on the car’s computer that the driver can play, but only when the car is in park. The games are meant to pass the time while the car charges, presumably at a Tesla Supercharger.

I rented 2 cars last week and both had lane assist and nav. I liked the nav but did not care for the assist func. 2500 mi and not 1 close call.

If you’re crossing a white line, you’re changing lanes and in either case you should be using your turn signal when you merge.

Because it is a computer with a “car function”
 Just joking!

I recently got a Lyft ride in a Tesla Model Y. Huge screen in the middle of the car displaying a map to the right and “situation awareness video” to the left. I don’t know what Tesla calls it but it displays a graphic of the car and every other car around the Tesla as viewed from above. It could cover two lanes either side of the car and displayed the type (not brand) of car, truck, SUV, not just a blob. I was mesmerized! You could clearly see when a car to the right or left was within the lane change impact zone. Better than the yellow indicators in the side mirrors.

Its not clear to me how it gets the birds eye view. The problem is how to access all this stuff or not.

It blends the images from the front, side, and rear cameras, along with an embedded image of the top of that particular vehicle. On my vehicle, one push of the forward vision camera button activates the forward vision image, and a second push provides the birds eye view. This procedure may differ with other makes & models.

I have found that vehicles with EPS are able to lane assist with the vibrating steering wheel and moving you back in your lane, while vehicles with HPS can only visually and audio alert you since it is not a steer by wire
I can turn mine off as well as my daughters Corolla’s off
We have tons of curves so it is almost a game to try and not trigger the alerts
 lol

I love the DRCC (dynamic radar CC), it brakes for you and if you set your speed faster than flow of traffic, it will keep you at a set distance from the vehicle in front of you, if in traffic I still rest my foot on the gas pedal, so no difference in braking time if/when needed

And I love having the automatic emergency braking (Pre-Collision System), it has possibly saved me a few times, I was always on the brakes hard, but just like ABS, it is hard to out think that computer
I have yet to test the Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), can get anyone to walk in front of me while driving slowly to see if the truck will stop or not
 :man_shrugging:

I turn it off on my Highlander also
however that doesn’t mean it’s not a good feature - especially for some elderly and new drivers.

+1

I have to wonder if the people who decry these advanced driver assistance features have ever considered that these technologies can protect them from other drivers who are inattentive/drowsy/unskilled/reckless.

Those same technophobes apparently also think that they are immune to ever making a mistake behind the wheel. I probably haven’t made a lot of mistakes behind the wheel, in light of the fact that since 1971, I have been able to drive for 55 years/600k+ miles without even scratching a fender. But, that doesn’t mean that I am immune to ever making a mistake behind the wheel, and if I do make a mistake, that technology provides an extra layer of protection for my passengers and for the people with whom I share the road.

Exactly, that is why people say they had an accident, don’t remember ever hearing to many/any people say they had an on purposedent

@Old-Days-Rick is fundamentally against ANY automotive technology from the last 30 years

I dunno but i can think of several times when braking would not have been helpful when i made a quick maneuver to avoid an accident. It was frosty on the freeway and a salt truck was in the right lane. Spose about 30 mph, then the truck pulled right in front of us heading for the turn around. A quick shift to the right and missed him. Had i braked or had he stopped, i would have hit him broadside.

I had a similar years before where a guy came down a ramp and crossed in front of me. My quick reaction missed him. There would have been a few deer too. One i discovered hair on my rub strip when i got home. Cant say i would have been injured but the sand truck would have been pretty bad.

This stuff is fine for dry days as your mind wanders a little but you really sometimes have a split second to decjde to brake, swerve or both. Its just instinct. Start stop has got to go though.

Absolutely untrue. I believe cabin air filters are wonderful among other things. I am against technology that hurts longevity of the vehicle significantly.

Some people with alcoholic attitudes are ausing the self driving function of vehicles because they are too irresponsible to stay sober if they are to drive. Or maybe the self driving feature being enabled makes them a little more responsible than they normally be. Anyway its wrong and fits right in line with the alcoholic mindset.

All I was saying is that the K platform was VERY versatile. That doesn’t mean good or bad. Why are we discussing the K car still. We had a thread about ot woth wonderful stories and discussions and yo
I mean someone got it removed.

Being a truthsayer gets you canceled in 2026. Some people on here need to go work at the Whitehouse, people are getting really good at censorship of comments or topics that they disagree with, right in line woth the press room at the Whitehouse!

@Old-Days-Rick

here’s a partial list of things you’re against

ABS

Stability control

traction control

TPMS

lane-keeping assist

blind spot warning

EPS

disc brakes

adaptive cruise control

BEVs

EPB

So basically anything even REMOTELY modern

GM had a fine ABS and traction control system system in the early 70s. MaxTrak it was called. A wonderful system!

I don’t use the situation awareness video while driving. I use the conventional mirrors and the proximity warning. The left or right side of the awareness video glows yellow or orange or red to keep me from pulling into a car in the lane next to me. That’s my blind spot monitor. When I activate the turn signal the video shows the rear facing camera view of the lanes next to me. That’s the best view.
