This article discusses how GM specifically, as well as other automakers, test ADAS in simulators before releasing them on the road.
In related news, European regulators have finally forced Tesla to rename their Full Self Driving mode.
However, a name change will not stop irresponsible people from using that technology in irresponsible ways. Last week, a friend of mine had a patient who stated that he ALWAYS drives his Model Y in Full Self Driving mode, so that he can take his eyes off the road and watch videos on his smart phone.

Well man, pretty quiet around here so ill just stir the pot a little. Maybe fewer insults to posters would help.
I cant say that im thrilled with some of the supposed driver aids like lan3 departure. Get a little too close to the painted line and.the steering wheel tugs you back.
Im not sure about this on a slippery road. Quick wheel changes is the last thing you want. No shut off button like stop start.
Now i have developed an irrational fear of turbos. When the engine shuts down at a stop light, i just in-vision that oil cooking in a hot turbo. Cant be good so worth the $100 to shut it off. Prove me wrong?
It thinks your changing lanes. If you were actually changing lanes and turned your signal on it wouldnât tug you back. Itâs a light tug which you can easily overcome with about 2lbs of force.
Which vehicle does not allow the driver to switch off Lane Keep Assist?
No sense posting much when so many posts get flagged. I have a good idea whoâs doing it, some people cannot handle adult conversations! We cant even talk about the K car without it getting banned!
Have you considered itâs LOTS of people, not just one ![]()
Agreed! I have that feature on 2 cars⊠both turned OFF. Incredibly annoying. Both also have collision avoidance. I adjusted the Mustangâs down a bit but I donât tailgate so Iâve only experienced it once on each vehicle. My van has adaptive cruise control. Now that is useful, but I wish I could adjust the following distance a little shorter.
There are three following distance options. I find the longest of the three to be excessive in areas with moderate to heavy traffic; the empty space invites others to merge in front of me. The shortest distance is just right.
I believe it to be one person. Someone that canât accept other people have opinions or state matter of irrefutable facts. Kind of like the current situation in the WhitehâŠnevermind!
Its the price to pay for being a truthsayer. Nothing new for me!
Oh puhleeeezâŠ
No thank you!
I can steer my own car myself without any âhelpersâ.

These systems were designed for the other guyâŠ
I believe youâre mistaken
YOUR truth and yours alone, based on what Iâm seeing
exactly. Nothing new for you. You insist on praising and buying cars from yesteryear, which are universally accepted to be low-quality ![]()
You go right ahead. Keep your 1989 Chevy Caprice. While youâre at it, buy a 1981 Plymouth Reliant, since you seem to worship them ![]()
I suppose this is just what our current culture is, but all of this self-driving technology seems to exist just to enable more screen-time & therefore push more advertising at us.
I am officially old and I like the safety features. I have posted before the rear crossing system has kept me from backing out in front of another vehicle twice. I will not see it but I would like to tell my vehicle take me to the doctors office because where I live we do not have any public transportation. I may have to use something like Uber someday but right now I just do not want to get in a random vehicle. And of course Rick is Hijacking another thread.
Personally, I donât completely disagree with you about all of the safety features. But considering that Mr. Musk recently admitted to lying about the âautonomousâ capabilities of his vehicles (for years!), can you see where some folks may have some reasonable doubts about auto-makersâ claims?
The van is new to me⊠I have not found an adjustment for that as yet. Iâll have to dig into theâŠOwners Manual! ![]()
I can control crash avoidance. Settings are off, early, medium, and late. The default is medium. I get a warning on medium when I approach a curve with a car parked on the curve. Thatâs annoying, so I set it to late warning and avoid the alarm. I appreciate having the warning, just not as early as the default.
The only time I have a problem with lane departure is when lanes merge. If I move over too soon I cross the white line and the steering wheel will shake. In MD, there is generally no lane preference. Drivers are supposed to figure out who got to the merge first and fall in line. That almost always works. Iâm usually in the right lane because the line at the traffic light is shorter (two turn lanes) and there is a left turn almost at the end of the merge. I can get by a stopped turning car in the right lane.
While I donât disagree with this point but I think many people are already at that point.
Every time I stop for a light I can look to the car next to me and most times I see the driver checking their phone. So often that they miss the light turning green and require a little encouragement from a car horn to snap them out of their screen-trance.
