ABS Brake Chatter

Hi! I have a 1998 GMC Sierra 2500 with 101,000 miles on it. Recently, on two occasions, there is a chatter when I am braking at slow speeds. Other internet research indicates it might be a broken ABS Sensor Ring. Does this seem right? Any other suggestions. The vehicle has a special device for “trimming” the brakes when pulling a trailer. Could that have anything to do with this? THANKS for any help you can give.

Check with your dealer. I think there is a recall on this problem. It is very common and can be dangerous, so you do want to get it fixed. I have heard of people driving through their garages because of this!

A cracked tone ring can cause this problem. But so can a tone ring that has a lot of debris accumulated on it. Such as brake dust from semi-metalic brake pads. The tone rings should be inspected for heavy debris accumulation. And if any is found, they can be cleaned with an aerosol can of sensor safe brake cleaner.
