You need to add under $20,000 to the title of the thread… He never said that all used cars are junk… He was specifically talking about used vehicles under 200,000 miles and under $20K…
The price of good-quality used vehicles has partly gone up because of what those vehicles cost when they were new… New vehicles are significantly more expensive than they were 10 years ago, so naturally, that has pushed up the price of comparable used vehicles as well… It’s not necessarily that newer used cars are “junk” — the market and the cost of vehicles have changed considerably…
I found 1200 vehicles within 30 miles of me with under 100,000 miles, under 10 years old, and priced between $14,000 and $17,500. I VERY much doubt that all of them are “junk”.

Those are not newer used cars, they are older used cars (that Ford is 12 years old). They are too old to be on a new dealer’s used car lot. Respectable dealers don’t sell used cars with 200,000 miles on them.
That YouTube guy is in the entertainment business, not providing real advice. Those old cars are a gamble and buyers should offer accordingly. Trouble is that there are enough people that will finance old car purchases and pay the asking price.
Those are the cars Dave Ramsey refers to as a “$2,000 beater” that one should buy to avoid car payments. Today, they ask $12,000 for the $2K beater Ramsey talks about. People are better off to keep the $20,000 vehicle and avoid those worn-out cars.

You are correct that no one should finance a used vehicle with 200k miles on it, and that the asking prices for these vehicles are ridiculous considering how much of the useful life has already been depleted. However, the fact remains that buying a used vehicle from the 1990s or 2000s with 200k miles on it is a much better bet than buying a used vehicle from the 2010s-2020s with 200k miles on it. The 1990s-2000s vehicle will be cheap enough to justify the high mileage, and it will be easier to work on when necessary.
The quality of new threads in general on this forum is at an all-time low, and if someone posts a real automotive topic as @CapriRacer did, it gets hijacked every time.
And when someone posts an empty reply with nothing more than criticism for the OP, they acquire “likes”. This doesn’t improve the standard of the forum.
